Chapter 12 - A New Morning

The sun rose gently over the small town, painting the morning sky in breathtaking hues of gold and amber. The county hospital was now secure, guarded by federal officers as Sarah received proper medical treatment to flush the toxins from her system.
Jax sat in the quiet waiting room, holding a warm cup of coffee that had long gone cold. His knuckles were bruised and his body ached, but for the first time in his life, his mind felt completely peaceful. The shadows that had haunted him for nearly a decade had finally been lifted.
The door to the private room opened softly, and Doc Thomas stepped out, smiling warmly. "She's going to make a full recovery, Jax. A few days of rest, and she'll be back on her feet."
Jax let out a long breath he felt like he'd been holding for eight years. "Thank you, Doc. For everything."
"Don't thank me," Doc said gently, nodding toward the room. "Thank that brave little boy of yours. If he hadn't traveled across the state with nothing but a photograph and a dream, none of us would be standing here today."

Jax walked into the room. Sarah was sitting up in bed, looking infinitely healthier, her eyes glowing as she watched Leo draw a picture on a pad of paper at her bedside table.
When Leo saw Jax enter, he jumped up from his chair and ran across the room, wrapping his arms around Jax's waist. Jax dropped to his knees, pulling the boy tight into his arms, burying his face in Leo's shoulder.
