Chapter 13 - Burning the Past

Two weeks later, the morning air was crisp and cool. The small town diner was bustling with its usual breakfast crowd, but today, things felt distinctly different.

Jax stood outside near his motorcycle, watching the flames from a small metal barrel dance in the breeze. He held his old leather vest—the symbol of his violent, chaotic past with the motorcycle club. One by one, he cut off the patches and threw them into the fire, watching them turn into black ash.

Martha walked out of the diner, carrying two hot mugs of coffee, and handed one to Jax. "Hard to let go?" she asked softly, watching the fire.

"No," Jax said, without a single moment of hesitation. "It's the easiest thing I've ever done."

"Where are you three going?" Martha asked, looking over at the small blue sedan parked near the diner entrance, where Sarah was sitting comfortably in the passenger seat, laughing with Leo.

"North," Jax said, a small, rare smile gracing his features. "Somewhere quiet by the ocean. Somewhere where nobody knows my name, and where Leo can grow up without ever having to look over his shoulder."

Martha patted his arm gently. "You're a good man, Jax. Don't ever let anyone convince you otherwise."

Jax finished his coffee, threw the empty cup into the trash, and turned toward the car. He had spent his entire life running away from things that scared him, but now, he was finally running toward something worth living for.
