Chapter 8 - The Breach

Night fell fast over the valley, painting the sky in deep shades of navy and purple. Doc Thomas's old pickup truck rolled quietly down the back alley of the small county medical center. In the bed of the truck, hidden beneath a heavy tarp, sat Jax and Leo.

Jax double-checked his equipment. He didn't want to bring Leo anywhere near the danger, but leaving him alone in the woods was even riskier. He looked at the boy, who was sitting quietly in the dark, watching his every move with unwavering trust.

"Listen to me, Leo," Jax whispered, adjusting the strap of his vest. "When we get inside, you stick to Doc like glue. He's going to lead you straight to your mom's room. I'm going to take care of the guards at the front."

"Are you coming with us?" Leo asked, his voice trembling slightly.

"Always," Jax promised, squeezing the boy's shoulder.

Doc Thomas parked the truck near the loading dock, leaving the engine idling quietly. He walked around to the back, pulling back the tarp to give them the signal. "The rear security door is unlocked. Vance only left two guards at the main entrance, but they'll be patrolling every twenty minutes."

Jax stepped out of the bed, helping Leo down. They moved like ghosts through the dim corridor of the facility, the sharp smell of antiseptic burning Jax's nose. Doc Thomas led Leo toward the West Wing, while Jax drew his weapon and slipped quietly toward the main lobby.

As Jax rounded the corner, he spotted the two guard men standing near the nurse station, laughing quietly as they checked their phones. With swift, silent movements, Jax closed the distance, striking the first guard across the temple with the butt of his gun before the man could react. The second guard turned in shock, reaching for his weapon, but Jax grabbed his arm, driving him hard into the wall and knocking him unconscious.

"Clear," Jax grunted under his breath, turning back toward the hallway to reunite with his family.
