Chapter 7 - The Fractured Home

Clara sat huddled on the bottom step of the staircase, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees. Her light blue dress was dusty, and her brown hair was tangled from the frantic struggle. From upstairs came the muffled sound of her parents arguing in frantic, hushed whispers. She couldn't understand most of the words, but the heavy, toxic atmosphere of guilt and fear hung over the house like a physical weight.
Slowly, Clara stood up. She didn't go back up to the hallway. Instead, she walked toward the dark, narrow corridor leading to the old basement door beneath the stairs.
The basement was rarely used—a damp, concrete cellar that predated the rest of the suburban renovation. Her parents had always kept the deadbolt locked, warning her that spiders and unstable foundations made it dangerous. But tonight, the rules of their household had shattered into a million jagged pieces.
Clara reached out and twisted the brass doorknob. To her surprise, it turned easily with a soft click. Her father must have forgotten to lock it in his panic upstairs.
She pulled the heavy wooden door open. A wave of freezing, subterranean air washed over her, carrying that same familiar scent of damp earth and old iron. A single bare lightbulb hung from a frayed cord at the bottom of the concrete steps.
Clara took a tentative step downward, her soft shoes making no sound against the dusty concrete.
"Hello?" she whispered into the dimness.
Down here, the house felt entirely different—its polished upstairs veneer stripped away to reveal rotting foundation beams, exposed brick, and a labyrinth of old utility shafts. And right there, built into the brick foundation wall, was a rusted iron hatchway leading deeper into the earth, slightly ajar.
A small shadow detached itself from the darkness near the hatch. Clara gasped, clutching her white collar. Standing before her in the dim light was her twin sister, wearing the same tattered, filthy dress, her bare feet standing directly on the cold concrete.

"You found the door, Clara," the twin whispered, smiling a terrifying, hollow smile. "Now help me open the rest of the way. The things living down here are getting hungry."
