Chapter 2 - The Iron Grip

The father stared down at the tiny, gray hands gripping the metal slats from the dark abyss beneath the floorboards. His breath hitched in his throat. Every muscle in his navy blue suit tensed, his hands hovering inches above the floor as if paralyzed by an invisible electric shock.

"Arthur, get away from it!" the mother screamed from the doorway, her voice cracking as she pressed her back against the wallpapered wall, her fingers digging into her maroon dress. "Don't touch it! Don't look at it!"

"It touched her, Elena," Arthur whispered, his voice shaking with a terrifying realization. "The hands... they are the same size as Clara's."

Clara sat frozen a few feet away, her small hands clutching the hem of her light blue dress. Her brown hair clung to her damp forehead. She looked back and forth between her panicked parents and the metal vent, where the pale fingers were now tapping a rhythmic, desperate SOS against the iron.

"Papa, she wants out," Clara whispered innocently, her voice cutting through the heavy tension like a shard of glass. "She said you locked the door."

Arthur swallowed hard, his throat dry. He slowly reached out his hand, his fingers trembling as they hovered just an inch above the metal slats. The tiny hands inside suddenly stopped tapping. A soft, raspy sigh echoed up through the vent, carrying the unmistakable scent of stale bread and long-forgotten tears.

"Arthur, I swear to God, if you open that grate, we are all dead," Elena sobbed, sliding down the wall until she sat on the floor, burying her face in her hands.

Arthur ignored her warning. He reached down and gripped the edges of the heavy iron grate, his knuckles turning white. With a slow, agonizing pull, the rusted screws groaned in protest, and the vent cover lifted an inch, revealing a pair of hollow, sunken eyes staring up from the pitch darkness.
