Chapter 10 - The Network of Spies

The scratching sound intensified, vibrating upward through the concrete floor and echoing through the air ducts overhead. It wasn't just Maya down there in the dark. The entire foundation of the house seemed alive, a labyrinth of hidden shafts and hollow spaces breathing beneath their feet.

"Arthur... what is that?" Elena whispered, pressing her back against the damp brick wall, her eyes darting frantically toward the ceiling where the metal air vents converged.

"The architecture," Arthur muttered, his voice hollow as the realization settled over him. "When we bought this old house... the previous owner was an engineer. He built a secondary ventilation system for a bomb shelter during the Cold War. It connects every room, every hallway, every floor."

Clara clutched her arms, shivering in the cold basement air. "She said they were listening to us through the vents, Mama. All this time."

Elena slid down the brick wall, burying her face in her hands as silent, hopeless tears shook her frame. "They heard everything. Every argument, every secret, every lie we told each other in the dark."

Arthur walked slowly toward the rusted iron hatchway, his navy blue suit stained with basement dust. He didn't try to close it this time. Instead, he knelt down and shone the flashlight from his phone into the dark, sloping tunnel. The beam cut through swirling dust motes, revealing a network of corrugated metal pipes stretching out in multiple directions like the veins of a monstrous underground organism.

Deep within one of the pipes, two pale, luminous eyes reflected the light.

Maya was sitting there, watching them with an unsettling, patient calm. Beside her, other faint shadows shifted in the darkness—silent, gaunt figures half-glimpsed in the periphery of the beam.

"You can't lock us out anymore, Daddy," Maya’s raspy voice echoed through the metal pipe. "The walls are too thin. The house is too old. And we are tired of eating bread crumbs."

Arthur swallowed hard, his throat tight. "What do you want, Maya? Just tell me what it will take to make this right."

May you like

Maya tilted her head, a chilling smile stretching across her gaunt face. "We want what you took from us. We want to trade places. One of you stays down here in the dark, and one of us gets to walk upstairs in the light."
