Chapter 6 - The Floorboards Give Way

The sharp crack of splintering timber sent a tremor through the hallway floorboards. Arthur lunged forward, throwing his weight over the vent and the weak patch of wood surrounding it, trying to pin the flooring down with his own body.

"She’s breaking through!" Elena shrieked, grabbing Clara by the shoulders and dragging her backward toward the stairs. "Get out of the hallway, Clara! Now!"

"Let her up, Papa! She’s freezing!" Clara screamed, fighting against her mother’s grip, her light blue dress tearing slightly at the seam as Elena yanked her down the stairs.

Arthur pressed his palms flat against the wooden floor, feeling the desperate, frantic thumping of small fists beating against the underside of the timber. The old wood was rotting, weakened by years of dampness and neglect from the crawlspace below.

"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" Arthur yelled down into the darkness, tears dripping from his chin onto the polished floor. "We’re going to get you out! I swear to God, we're calling an ambulance right now!"

"An ambulance?" Elena’s voice echoed sharply from the bottom of the stairs. She stood on the landing, her dark maroon dress contrasting sharply with the pale terror on her face. "And what do we tell the police, Arthur? That we kept a child locked beneath the floorboards of a suburban home for seven years while we raised her twin upstairs? They’ll lock us away for the rest of our lives!"

"Then let them!" Arthur roared, desperate to reclaim some shred of his humanity. "We are monsters, Elena! We left a little girl to rot in the dark!"

With a deafening crunch, a small, pale hand punched straight through the rotting floorboards right beside Arthur’s knee. The wooden plank splintered outward, spraying dust and gray debris into the hallway air.

Arthur gasped, pulling his leg back just in time. Through the jagged hole in the floor, two hollow, accusing eyes stared straight up at him through the gloom.

"You can't hide from what you buried, Daddy," a raspy voice whispered from the breach. "The house belongs to both of us now."
