Chapter 14 - The Final Truth

The featureless figure in the navy blue suit stood in the center of the kitchen, its terrifying, skin-tight smile widening as Elena cowered against the cabinets. Clara stood silently beside her mother, watching the entity with a strange, unnatural calm that seemed to defy the nightmare unfolding around them.

"Where is my father?" Clara asked, her voice steady and clear.

The entity tilted its head. A second voice—Arthur’s actual voice, strained and exhausted—echoed faintly from deep within the creature’s chest, as if trapped behind a wall of flesh.

"I am down there, Clara," Arthur’s voice rasped. "In the dark. Paying the debt. Because the house demands balance. For every year of light we stole, a year in the earth must be paid."

Elena sobbed hysterically, shaking her head. "We can fix this! We can leave! We can burn this cursed place to the ground!"

"You can't burn what lives inside you, Elena," the entity replied, its tone shifting to a collective murmur of multiple overlapping voices—Maya, Arthur, and others who had vanished into the walls long before them. "Guilt is the strongest foundation. It holds the walls together better than concrete."

Clara slowly turned away from the faceless entity. She walked over to the hallway floor air vent, knelt down on the wooden floorboards just as she had on the very first night, and looked through the metal slats.

Down in the darkness, illuminated by a faint, warm sliver of light, a pair of eyes looked up at her. It was Arthur, sitting in the dusty crawlspace, holding a small piece of white bread in his calloused hands.

"Papa?" Clara whispered softly down through the vent.

Arthur looked up through the slats, his face worn with sorrow, yet filled with a strange, peaceful acceptance.

"I brought you bread," Arthur whispered back up to her.
