Chapter 5 - The Confession Beneath the Floor

The metallic scrape of the vent sliding open made both parents freeze instantly. Elena spun around, her face twisting in fury, but before she could lunge toward Clara, a soft, raspy whisper floated up from the dark opening.

"Don't listen to them, Clara," the underground twin whispered, her voice carrying a chilling clarity. "They didn't just lock the door. They watched the fire spread. They chose you because you were the quiet one."

Clara recoiled, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked up at her mother, whose expression had morphed from anger into sheer, unadulterated panic.

"Clara, step away from that vent right now," Elena commanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "That thing down there is not your sister. It’s a ghost, a trick of the old house. It wants to destroy our family."

"She knows my name, Mama!" Clara cried out, her voice cracking with betrayal. "She wears the same dress! She has my face!"

Arthur walked back over, kneeling beside Clara. He gently placed a heavy hand on her shoulder, his eyes red-rimmed and hollow. The bravado of his navy blue suit was gone, leaving only a broken man weighed down by a decade of agonizing guilt.

"She’s right, Clara," Arthur said softly, his voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator downstairs. "We were cowards. When the nursery caught fire, the smoke was too thick. We grabbed you from the crib near the door. By the time we realized your sister was trapped behind the blocked wardrobe, the flames had engulfed the hallway. The fire department said everyone perished. We... we didn't check the crawlspace beneath the floorboards."

Elena slammed her hand against the wall. "Because the floor was burning! We would have all died!"

"And we left her to starve in the dark for seven years?" Arthur shouted back, his voice finally breaking as tears spilled over his cheeks.

Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed from directly beneath their feet, followed by the sound of wood splintering. The girl in the crawlspace wasn't just talking anymore—she was kicking the rotting floorboards from below.
