Chapter 11 - The Impossible Trade

The demand hung in the damp, freezing air of the basement, heavy and suffocating. Clara gasped, her small hands flying to her mouth as she stared at her father.

"Trade places?" Arthur whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth.

"No! Absolutely not!" Elena screamed, scrambling to her feet and rushing over to yank Arthur back from the hatchway. "She’s lying! You can't negotiate with a demon born of our guilt, Arthur! She wants to drag us all down into the dirt!"

Maya’s laughter echoed through the metal pipe—a high, chilling sound that lacked any childlike warmth. "It’s only fair, Mama. Seven years in the dark for seven years in the light. Which one of you is going to pay the debt?"

Arthur stood frozen, looking down at his wife and then back at his living daughter standing by the stairs. The weight of his past cowardice pressed down on his shoulders like a lead weight. He remembered the night of the fire, the thick black smoke, the blinding panic, and the terrible split-second choice he made to save only one child.

"She's right, Elena," Arthur said softly, his voice devoid of all fight. "We built this prison. Not just for her, but for ourselves. We’ve been living a lie upstairs every single day."

"Are you insane?!" Elena shrieked, grabbing the lapels of his ruined suit, her eyes wild with terror. "We have a family! We have Clara! You can't just give yourself to the dark!"

"I'm not giving myself to the dark," Arthur said, looking deep into his wife's terrified eyes. "I'm going down there to find out what else is living in these walls."

Before Elena could stop him, Arthur unbuttoned his suit jacket, letting it drop to the concrete floor. He took a deep breath, dropped to his hands and knees, and crawled headfirst through the rusted iron hatchway into the dark, suffocating tunnel.

"Papa, no!" Clara screamed, running toward the hatch, but the iron door slammed shut from the inside with a resounding, thunderous crash.
