Chapter 12 - Darkness Within

The heavy iron hatch sealed shut with a finality that echoed through the damp cellar. Elena screamed, throwing her weight against the rusted metal, beating her fists against it until her knuckles bled.
"Arthur! Arthur, open the door!" she wept, sliding down against the cold barrier.
Clara stood frozen a few feet away, her light blue dress stained with basement grime, her long brown hair framing a face carved with absolute shock. The basement was dead silent now, save for Elena’s ragged sobbing and the distant, rhythmic dripping of water somewhere deep within the foundation.
"Mama," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "What do we do now?"
Elena didn't answer. She just stared at the iron hatch, her breathing shallow and rapid.
Suddenly, a muffled thud echoed from the ceiling directly above them. Then another. The sound of heavy footsteps pacing back and forth across the wooden floorboards of the ground-floor hallway—steps that sounded heavy, deliberate, and entirely unfamiliar.
Elena scrambled backward, grabbing Clara by the hand and pulling her toward the cellar stairs. "Upstairs. We need to get out of the house right now."
They rushed up the concrete steps, bursting back into the warm, familiar kitchen of their home. But something was wrong. The air felt colder, the lights flickered with a sickly yellow hue, and the smell of damp earth and old iron had followed them up from the cellar.
Elena grabbed her car keys from the kitchen counter, her hands shaking so violently she dropped them twice before managing to clutch them tight. She threw the back door open, intending to run straight to the car parked in the driveway.
She stopped dead on the threshold.
The suburban street outside was gone. In its place was an endless expanse of gray, swirling fog, with the silhouettes of identical houses stretching out into an infinite, silent void.
Clara peeked out from behind her mother’s maroon dress, her eyes wide with terror.

"Mama... where is our street?" she whispered.
