Chapter 1 - The First Whisper

The cold draft from the metal floor air vent always smelled of damp earth and old iron. Clara kneeled on the worn wooden floorboards of the upstairs hallway, her light blue dress with its crisp white collar pressing against her knees. Her long brown hair fell forward as she pushed a soft slice of white bread through the narrow metal slats.

"I brought you bread," she whispered into the darkness below.

Footsteps echoed sharply against the wood. Her mother, hair pulled back tightly in a bun and wearing a dark maroon dress, rushed down the hallway. With a sharp motion, her mother grabbed Clara’s shoulder and pulled her backward away from the vent, her face pale and panicked.

"I told you not to feed her," her mother hissed, her voice trembling with suppressed fury.

"She’s hungry, Mama! She talks to me when you’re asleep!" Clara cried, tears welling in her eyes.

"We do not speak of what is down there! Do you understand me? Never go near that vent again!" her mother snapped, her grip tightening painfully on Clara's arm.

Before Clara could reply, her father stepped out from the master bedroom, his navy blue suit rumpled and tie loosened. He knelt beside Clara, his expression a mix of guilt and exhaustion. He wrapped his arms around her to soothe her trembling shoulders.

Suddenly, a sound echoed from the dark shaft—a faint scratching, followed by the metallic clink of tiny fingers wrapping around the underside of the vent.

Clara looked up at her father with wide, terrified eyes.

"Papa… help me," she whispered softly.

Her father froze. Slowly, he looked down at the floor. In the dim hallway light, a pair of impossibly small, pale hands gripped the rusted metal slats from the inside, pulling desperately toward the light.
