Chapter 8

The evening sun cast a warm golden glow across the back patio of the Vance estate. The heavy, oppressive silence that had dominated the house for years was gone, replaced by the unfamiliar, beautiful sound of genuine laughter drifting through the open French doors. Lily and Chloe were sitting at the wrought-iron patio table, eagerly dipping paintbrushes into vibrant pots of watercolor, creating chaotic, joyful masterpieces on heavy art paper.

Julian sat nearby, sipping a cup of black coffee while reviewing architectural blueprints for the renovation of the east wing—a deliberate effort to strip away every remaining trace of Elena’s cold, minimalist interior design. He wanted the house to feel like a home again, filled with color, warmth, and life.

Marcus stepped out onto the patio, holding a fresh legal brief and a steaming mug. He pulled out a chair opposite Julian and sat down with an audible sigh of relief. "Well, the restraining order has been officially served, and her bank accounts remain entirely frozen. Her legal team is already trying to negotiate a quiet settlement regarding the divorce terms, hoping to avoid criminal prosecution for the embezzlement."

Julian didn't look up from his blueprints immediately. He took a sip of his coffee, letting the dark liquid warm his throat. "And what does she want in exchange for a quiet settlement?"

"Pride, mostly," Marcus said, leaning back in his chair. "She wants to walk away without a criminal record, claiming irreconcilable differences rather than court-proven abuse and financial theft. She’s willing to relinquish all claims to the estate and the trusts."

"Let her have the clean exit on paper, provided she signs an ironclad non-disclosure and non-compete regarding the girls," Julian decided firmly, looking up to watch Chloe proudly hold up a painting of a very lopsided, bright pink cat. "I don’t want her dragging the girls through years of sensationalized trial coverage. I just want her completely out of our lives, permanently."

Marcus nodded approvingly. "I’ll draw up the final settlement papers tonight. It’s the cleanest way to close this dark chapter and let everyone move forward."

Julian smiled faintly, standing up to walk over to his daughters. Chloe immediately ran up to him, showing off her painting with immense pride. "Look, Daddy! It's our new family cat. We're going to adopt a real one tomorrow, right?"

Julian laughed, a genuine, resonant sound that he hadn't heard from himself in years. He scooped Chloe up into his arms, feeling her small, healthy weight against his chest, completely unburdened by fear or anxiety. "Only if you promise to help feed it, sweetheart. Only if we do it together."
