Chapter 6

The courtroom was suffocatingly hot, smelling of old paper, floor wax, and manufactured urgency. Julian sat beside Marcus at the defense table, his posture rigid and composed in a dark charcoal suit. Across the aisle sat Elena, impeccably dressed in a tailored white Chanel suit, her hair pulled back into her signature sleek updo. She radiated an aura of cool, untouchable confidence, flanked by two high-priced attorneys who whispered quietly into her ear.
Judge Harrison, a weathered man with sharp eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, adjusted his spectacles and looked down at the dense stack of documents before him. He cleared his throat, silencing the murmurs in the gallery.
"We are here today to address the emergency petition filed by Mrs. Elena Vance regarding temporary custody of the minors, Lily and Chloe Vance, as well as counter-motions regarding domestic incidents," Judge Harrison announced, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "Mr. Marcus, representing Mr. Julian Vance, you’ve submitted voluminous digital evidence including internal security logs and financial records. The court has reviewed them preliminarily."
Elena’s lead attorney stood up smoothly, buttoning his jacket with practiced grace. "Your Honor, our client has been subjected to violent, unprovoked assault by Mr. Vance, as evidenced by the initial police report and security footage from the residence. Mr. Vance’s erratic behavior makes him entirely unfit to retain primary custody. Mrs. Vance has lovingly cared for these children and wishes only to protect them from a volatile environment."
Marcus rose immediately, his expression unreadable. "Your Honor, opposing counsel conveniently omits the context leading up to that brief altercation. We direct the court's attention to Exhibit C—the unredacted security logs and audio files from the estate's kitchen and hallways over the past six months."

Marcus signaled the court technician, and the large projector screen mounted on the wall flickered to life. Instead of showing Julian’s shove, the screen displayed clear, undeniable footage of Elena systematically terrorizing the nine-year-old twins, forcing them into degrading labor, and mocking their grief over their late mother. Simultaneously, audio clips of Elena’s chilling threats played through the courtroom speakers, echoing clearly in the silent room.
Elena’s pristine composure fractured for a fraction of a second. Her head snapped toward the screen, her dark eyes flashing with sudden, venomous hatred before she quickly reasserted her mask of serene detachment. However, the damage was done. Judge Harrison’s face darkened visibly as he listened to the cold, calculated cruelty emanating from the audio system.
