Chapter 3

The morning sun cast pale, slanted light across the mahogany desk in Julian’s private study. He sat in his leather chair, rubbing the bridge of his nose to stave off a throbbing tension headache that had persisted since the previous night. The house felt strangely quiet, devoid of the cold, precise instructions Elena usually barked at the domestic staff by seven in the morning. Lily and Chloe were still sleeping upstairs in their own bedrooms for the first time in months, away from the rigid schedule Elena had imposed.

A sharp knock at the heavy oak door broke the silence. Julian looked up to see Marcus, his longtime attorney and trusted friend, stepping into the room without waiting for an invitation. Marcus’s face was grim, a thick manila folder clutched tightly under his arm.

"I received your early morning message, Julian," Marcus said, closing the door softly behind him. "And frankly, I was shocked. You tossed Elena out into the street? Do you have any idea what kind of legal minefield you've just stepped into?"

Julian gestured to the leather chair opposite him. "Sit down, Marcus. I didn't have a choice. She crossed a line that can never be uncrossed. She forced my nine-year-old daughters to kneel on a hard kitchen floor and told them they belonged at her feet. If I hadn't intervened, God knows what psychological damage she would have inflicted."

Marcus sat down slowly, placing the folder on the desk. He opened it to reveal several printed financial statements and legal notices. "I don't doubt your reasons, Julian. Elena is a cold, calculated woman. But her family trusts hold immense sway in this city. Within an hour of leaving your house last night, she contacted her father’s legal team. They are already preparing a petition for emergency custody of the girls, claiming you are an unstable, absentee father who created a hostile environment."

Julian stared at his friend, disbelief warring with sudden, icy rage. "Custody? The girls aren't even her biological children. My first wife passed away when they were toddlers. Elena was stepmother for three years, and she treated them like poorly behaved pets."

"Legally, she adopted them two years ago," Marcus reminded him gently, watching Julian’s reaction carefully. "She leveraged your absences during the corporate merger to secure full parental rights. She planned this contingency meticulously, Julian. She knew exactly what she was doing."

Julian gripped the edge of the mahogany desk until his knuckles turned white. The realization hit him with sickening clarity: Elena hadn't lost her temper in the kitchen; she had deliberately engineered a crisis to provoke him into a physical reaction. The shove, the forceful ejection—it was all captured on the smart-home security cameras that Elena herself had insisted on installing throughout the estate. She had baited him into domestic violence to build her case.
