Chapter 1

The heavy echo of Julian’s voice still reverberated off the pristine white tiles of the kitchen floor. Elena lay sprawled near the pantry entrance, her navy blue evening gown pooling around her like spilled ink. The diamonds in her ears caught the fluorescent glare overhead, glittering with a cold, unforgiving light. Her sleek updo had partially unraveled, a single dark strand falling across her high cheekbone as she looked up at the man she had called her husband for seven long years. There was no terror in her dark eyes, only a calculated assessment of the damage. Julian stood rigidly over her, his grey suit jacket straining across his broad shoulders as his chest heaved with unchecked fury. His finger remained rigidly extended toward the grand white double doors that led out to the foyer and the cold night beyond.
On the floor a few feet away, the nine-year-old twins, Lily and Chloe, huddled together in their matching blue and white maid-like dresses. Their faces were flushed, and fresh tears continued to track through the dust on their cheeks. They clung to each other, small shoulders trembling with the lingering shock of the humiliation Elena had deliberately inflicted upon them. Julian did not look back down at his daughters just yet; his entire focus remained locked on the woman who had brought this absolute rot into their immaculate home.
"You heard me, Elena," Julian repeated, his voice dropping from a shout to a low, gravelly rasp that carried far more menace. "Get up, take your things, and get out of my sight before I forget every civilized instinct I possess."
Elena slowly pushed herself up onto one elbow, smoothing the expensive silk of her skirt with agonizing deliberation. She refused to look rushed or defeated. Instead, she offered a thin, mirthless smile that didn't reach her eyes. "You think throwing me out solves the underlying rot in this house, Julian? You think these little angels are as innocent as they pretend to be?"

"Don't you dare," Julian warned, taking a sharp step forward, his hand curling into a tight fist at his side. "Don't you dare try to deflect your cruelty onto children. They were dusting the baseboards, Elena. They made a simple mistake with a glass figurine, and you forced them onto their knees like common criminals. That ends tonight. Our marriage ends tonight."
Elena finally rose to her feet, her posture remaining impeccably straight despite the indignity of the fall. She reached up, her manicured fingers gently brushing against her left diamond earring, confirming it was still securely fastened. She cast one fleeting, piercing glance toward the weeping twins, a look that promised reckoning rather than remorse. Without another word, she turned her back on her husband and walked slowly toward the exit, her head held high, leaving a stunned silence in the wake of her departure.
