Chapter 13

The morning of Elena’s arraignment broke clear and crisp, the autumn sunlight washing over the manicured lawns of the Vance estate in a brilliant golden hue. Julian woke early, preparing a simple, nourishing breakfast of pancakes and fresh fruit for Lily and Chloe. For the first time in years, the kitchen felt warm, inviting, and entirely free of tension. The white tiles no longer represented a place of humiliation and fear, but a space where life and laughter had returned.
The twins bounded into the kitchen, wearing bright, cheerful clothes and chattering excitedly about a school art project they were working on. Julian smiled, pouring fresh orange juice into their glasses and joining them at the table.
"Daddy, can we go to the park after school today?" Chloe asked, spreading thick strawberry jam across her pancake. "The leaves are turning all different colors, and we want to collect them for our scrapbooks."
"We can definitely do that," Julian promised, leaning down to kiss the top of her head. "I have no meetings this afternoon. It’ll just be the three of us."
Lily looked up from her plate, her wise-beyond-her-years eyes meeting her father's. "Mom—Elena isn't ever coming back here, is she, Daddy?"
Julian paused for a moment, choosing his words with absolute care and honesty. "No, sweetheart, she isn't. She made choices that hurt our family, and she has to face the consequences of those actions in a court of law. But you are safe, and nothing and no one will ever make you feel small in this house again."

Lily nodded slowly, a profound sense of relief settling over her features. She reached out and grabbed her father’s hand, squeezing it tightly. "We know, Daddy. We feel safe now."
Later that morning, as Marcus represented Julian at the downtown courthouse during Elena’s formal arraignment, Julian walked his daughters to the front doors of their elementary school. He watched them skip up the concrete steps, blending in seamlessly with the other children, unburdened by rigid schedules, harsh rules, or hidden fears. As the school bell rang, signaling the start of a bright, ordinary day, Julian turned back toward his car with a heart lighter than it had been in a decade.
