Chapter 2

As the distant front door clicked shut, the heavy tension in the kitchen slowly shifted into a fragile, fragile quiet. Julian immediately dropped to his knees beside Lily and Chloe, the fierce anger in his posture melting instantly into desperate paternal tenderness. He opened his arms wide, and the two girls launched themselves into his embrace, sobbing openly against the fine wool of his grey suit jacket. Julian held them tightly, burying his face in their soft hair, whispering low, repetitive reassurances that they were safe, that the nightmare of Elena’s tyranny was finally over.
"I've got you, my sweet girls," Julian murmured, his voice thick with emotion as he gently rubbed their backs. "I am so sorry I didn't come down sooner. I should have seen how bad things were getting. From now on, things are going to change. I promise you."
Chloe sniffled, wiping her nose with the sleeve of her blue maid dress, looking up at her father with wide, watery blue eyes. "Are we going to have to wear these silly uniforms anymore, Daddy? Mommy said we had to earn our keep because we were useless."
Julian’s jaw tightened at the memory of Elena’s harsh decree. "Those dresses are going straight into the incinerator tonight," he declared firmly, helping both girls stand up. "You are children, not servants. You belong in school, playing in the yard, and reading your books. Never, ever let anyone make you feel small again."

Lily gave a small, hesitant nod, her twin mirroring the gesture. Julian led them out of the stark, tiled kitchen and into the warm, wood-paneled library, a room Elena had rarely allowed them to inhabit because it disrupted her aesthetic vision of the estate. He settled them on the velvet sofa, wrapping them in heavy woolen throws, and went to the kitchen to fetch warm milk and honey. As he heated the milk on the stove, Julian looked at the sparkling clean counters and realized with a sickening jolt just how deeply Elena’s obsession with control had permeated every corner of their daily existence. He had been so absorbed in his demanding corporate career that he had blinded himself to the domestic prison his wife had constructed for his motherless daughters.
When he returned to the library, the girls were already leaning against each other, their eyelids drooping from the emotional exhaustion of the evening. Julian sat on the edge of the sofa, watching over them as they slowly sipped the warm drink. He knew that banishing Elena from the house was merely the first battle in what would undoubtedly be a brutal war. Elena came from old money and influential legal connections; she would not simply vanish into the night without a fight. But looking at the peaceful expressions finally settling onto his daughters' faces, Julian swore a silent oath that he would protect them at all costs, no matter what dark secrets Elena decided to unearth in retaliation.
