Chapter 9: The Financial Trap

The phone call ended with a mechanical click, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in hospital room 412. Julian stared at his blank phone screen as if willing it to ring back with an apology, but the screen remained dark.

Clara pulled herself up against the pillows, her face draining of what little color it had regained. "Julian... what does this mean? Did your mother just freeze our money?"

Julian ran both hands through his hair, dragging them down his face in sheer disbelief. "She cut us off completely. Every account, every credit card, every contingency fund. Even the medical trust for the baby has been blocked."

"How can she do that?" Clara’s voice rose in panic, her monitor beeping slightly faster in response to her spiking heart rate. "Our daughter is in an intensive care unit! They can't just cut off funding for a newborn!"

"My mother can do whatever the corporate bylaws allow, and she owns the majority voting shares," Julian said, his voice laced with venomous self-loathing. "She’s punishing us. She’s trying to starve us out, to force me crawling back to her boardroom on her terms."

"We need to call a lawyer," Clara insisted, her hands gripping the white hospital sheets. "There has to be a court injunction we can file. This is malicious abandonment of a newborn child."

"We will," Julian promised, stepping away from the bed and pacing the narrow strip of floor between the window and the chair. "I have contacts outside the family network. But legal motions take days, sometimes weeks, to process. Right now, we have to deal with the hospital administration."

As if on cue, a soft knock sounded at the door. Dr. Marcus entered the room, holding a clipboard against his white coat. His expression was serious, devoid of the cautious optimism he had offered the night before.

"Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling, good morning," Dr. Marcus greeted them, stepping further into the room. He glanced down at his chart before looking directly at Julian. "I need to speak with you regarding your daughter’s ongoing care plan."

Julian stopped pacing immediately. "Is something wrong with her vitals?"

"Her vitals are holding, but we received a notification from the hospital billing department this morning," Dr. Marcus explained quietly. "The family trust backing her neonatal care has flagged an administrative hold. The finance department is requesting immediate confirmation of alternative payment arrangements for the incubator and specialized respiratory treatments."

Julian felt a hot surge of anger mixed with profound humiliation rise in his chest. "Dr. Marcus, my mother has placed a malicious freeze on my accounts. It’s a domestic dispute, a retaliatory corporate tactic. I am good for the money. I have assets, stocks, properties—it will just take a few days to untangle them through the courts."

Dr. Marcus looked at Julian with sympathetic eyes. "Mr. Sterling, I understand this is a terrible personal situation. But I run a medical ward, not a legal department. Hospital policy dictates that elective and advanced specialized care requires guaranteed backing. If payment verification isn't resolved within forty-eight hours, the administration may require us to transition her to a standard county facility."

"A county facility?" Clara cried out, fresh tears spilling over her lashes. "She’s on a specialized ventilator! Moving her could kill her!"
