Chapter 7: The Empty Estate

Miles away across the city, the Sterling estate stood in heavy, brooding silence. The crystal chandelier in the grand living room cast brilliant prisms across the floor, illuminating the spot where the ceramic bowl had shattered hours earlier. The cleaning staff had already vacuumed the porcelain shards and wiped away the water stains, but the invisible fracture in the household remained entirely unhealed.
Eleanor Sterling sat in her high-backed leather armchair in the private study, a glass of vintage scotch resting on the mahogany desk before her. She swirled the amber liquid slowly, her eyes fixed on the flickering flames of the fireplace. The heavy oak doors creaked open, and Alyssa stepped inside, moving with silent grace.
"The hospital reports that the child survived the emergency delivery," Alyssa said, keeping her voice measured and professional as she stood before the desk.
Eleanor didn't look up. "Of course it survived. Modern medicine is entirely too efficient at keeping things alive that nature intended to prune."
"Julian has completely cut off communication," Alyssa continued, leaning slightly against the edge of the desk. "He hasn't answered calls from the board, and he explicitly told me he has no intention of attending tomorrow's shareholder meeting regarding the Asian acquisition."
At that, Eleanor’s hand tightened around the crystal glass so hard her knuckles turned white. She set the glass down with a sharp click that echoed in the quiet room. "He is throwing away a multi-billion-dollar empire for a temporary emotional impulse. That girl has poisoned his mind from the very beginning."
"What are our options, Eleanor?" Alyssa asked, her dark eyes narrowing. "If Julian refuses to sign the acquisition papers tomorrow, the board will look for an alternative successor. Your majority shares protect you, but a leadership vacuum will tank our stock value."
Eleanor stood up slowly, smoothing the geometric pattern of her pantsuit. Her posture was as unyielding as ever, her face mask-like in its cold calculation. "Julian thinks he can walk away and play the noble, impoverished father. He forgets whose blood runs in his veins. A Sterling does not surrender."
"Are you planning to disinherit him?" Alyssa asked, a hint of predatory curiosity coloring her tone.
"Disinheritance is too merciful," Eleanor replied, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper. "It allows them to live in peace and obscurity. I want Julian to realize that every comfort he has ever enjoyed, every dollar that keeps his precious daughter alive in that expensive hospital unit, belongs to me. And what I give, I can take away."

"The hospital bills are already piling into the corporate trust accounts," Alyssa noted. "Should I freeze his personal accounts tonight?"
Eleanor walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the manicured gardens bathed in moonlight. "Not tonight, Alyssa. Let him spend the night playing nursemaid in the NICU. Let him believe he has won a moral victory. Tomorrow morning, when the sun rises, we pull the rug out from under him completely. Let’s see how long his righteous indignation lasts when he can't even afford his daughter's incubator."
