Chapter 4: Hospital Corridors

The sterile white hallways of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital smelled sharply of antiseptic and bleach, a harsh contrast to the cedar and expensive perfume of the Sterling estate. Julian paced the length of the waiting area, his white shirt now wrinkled and stained with dust from the living room floor. His dress shoes clicked rhythmically against the linoleum, a metronome for his mounting panic.
Across the room, sitting on a molded plastic chair, Alyssa crossed her legs, looking completely out of place in her elegant black one-shoulder dress. She had followed them to the hospital in her own car, a silent shadow that Julian couldn't seem to shake.
"You don't need to be here, Alyssa," Julian said, his voice hard and flat as he stopped his pacing to glare at her. "Go home. Go back to my mother."
Alyssa checked her diamond-encrusted wristwatch before looking up, her expression serene. "Eleanor asked me to stay, Julian. She wants to ensure the family interests are protected. Besides, public hospitals are dreadfully dull; I prefer to know the outcome firsthand."
"This isn't a board meeting, Alyssa! This is my child—my wife!" Julian snapped, stepping forward, his fists clenched at his sides. The sheer exhaustion and fury in his eyes made even Alyssa flinch slightly.
Before Alyssa could retort, the heavy double doors of the maternity ward swung open. Dr. Marcus, a weary-looking obstetrician with graying temples and kind eyes, stepped out into the hallway. He pulled his surgical mask down around his neck, looking directly at Julian.
Julian rushed forward, stopping just inches from the doctor. "Dr. Marcus. How is Clara? And the baby?"
Dr. Marcus took a slow, deep breath, clasping his hands together in front of his white lab coat. "Mr. Sterling, your wife has been stabilized, but it was touch and go for a few minutes. She suffered severe placental abruption. We had to perform an emergency Cesarean section."
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The room seemed to tilt slightly. "The baby? Is my baby alive?"
"You have a daughter," Dr. Marcus said, a faint, reassuring smile breaking through his tired features. "She was born premature and is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit under strict observation. She’s tiny, and her lungs are underdeveloped, but she is fighting."
Julian slumped against the wall, burying his face in his hands as a long, shuddering sigh of relief escaped him. For a moment, the weight of the world lifted slightly, replaced by a profound, overwhelming wave of love and terror.

Alyssa stood up slowly from her chair, her face unreadable. She smoothed the front of her black dress and took a step toward the doctor. "And the mother? Will Clara recover fully?"
Dr. Marcus’s smile faded, replaced by a look of guarded professional caution. "She lost a significant amount of blood, and her emotional state is fragile. But physically, she will heal. However, I need to ask you both a serious question. The trauma that induced this premature labor—was it the result of a fall, or something else?"
