Chapter 5: The Doctor's Warning

Dr. Marcus’s question hung in the sterile air of the hospital corridor, heavy and probing. Julian lifted his head, wiping a stray tear from his cheek with the back of his hand. The adrenaline that had sustained him through the frantic ambulance ride was beginning to fade, leaving behind a profound bone-deep exhaustion.
"It wasn't a simple fall, Doctor," Julian said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. He shot a cold, sideways glance at Alyssa, who stood silently a few paces away. "It was brought on by extreme emotional trauma and physical stress caused directly by my mother."
Dr. Marcus frowned, adjusting his stethoscope around his neck. "Mr. Sterling, severe stress can wreak havoc on a high-risk pregnancy. Clara’s chart indicated she was already monitoring mild hypertension. We managed it for months, but today’s spike was catastrophic. If she experiences that level of distress again, her recovery—and her long-term health—could be severely compromised."
"She won't," Julian vowed, his jaw tightening. "I am moving her out of the estate the moment she is discharged. She won't have to face my mother ever again."
Alyssa stepped forward, her heels clicking softly on the linoleum. "And the corporate restructuring tomorrow, Julian? The board meeting with the overseas investors? Eleanor cannot handle that alone, and you know the bylaws. If you step away now, the Sterling Group loses the Asian acquisition."
Julian turned on her with a sudden, vicious intensity that made Alyssa step back. "I don't give a damn about the Asian acquisition, Alyssa! My daughter is fighting for every breath in an incubator down the hall, and my wife nearly died on a living room floor because your precious boss values bank accounts over human lives. Get out of my sight."
Alyssa’s eyes flashed with a dangerous spark of resentment, but she maintained her composure, smoothing the sleek fabric of her black dress. "You're making a grave mistake, Julian. Emotional decisions always ruin empires."
"Then let it burn," Julian muttered.
Dr. Marcus cleared his throat, breaking the tense standoff. "You can see your daughter in the NICU now, Mr. Sterling, provided you scrub in properly. And your wife is waking up in recovery. She’s asking for you."

Julian nodded gratefully to the doctor, completely ignoring Alyssa as he turned and hurried down the corridor toward the maternity wing. The stark white walls blurred past, but his destination was clear. For the first time in his life, Julian felt the liberating terror of standing completely alone against his family's legacy.
In the NICU, the low, rhythmic hum of the infant incubator welcomed him. Through the clear plastic wall, Julian saw his daughter for the first time. She was impossibly small, tangled in a web of delicate wires and tubes, her tiny chest rising and falling with heroic effort. Tears welled in Julian’s eyes once more, but this time, they were anchored by an unyielding resolve. He would protect this fragile new life, no matter the cost.
