Chapter 8: Dawn of Reality

The harsh morning light filtered through the horizontal blinds of hospital room 412, casting pale stripes across Clara’s face. She woke slowly, the lingering effects of medication making her limbs feel heavy and leaden. Julian was sitting in the plastic chair beside the bed, his head resting in his hands, asleep. He still wore the same wrinkled white shirt from yesterday, the collar stained with dust and sweat.
Clara shifted slightly, wincing as a dull ache radiated through her abdomen. The movement caused the hospital bed to creak softly, and Julian was instantly awake, his head snapping up with a look of instinctive panic that melted into relief when he saw her eyes open.
"Good morning," Julian rasped, his voice thick with sleep. He stood up, leaning over to press a tender kiss to her forehead. "How are you feeling?"
"Sore," Clara admitted, her voice weak. "What time is it?"
"Just past seven," Julian said, reaching for a paper cup of water on the bedside table and holding a straw to her lips. Clara drank gratefully, the cool liquid soothing her dry throat. "I checked on our daughter about an hour ago. Nurse Jenkins says her overnight vitals were stable. She gained a few grams, and her breathing is slightly more regular."
Clara managed a weak, exhausted smile, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Thank God. I need to see her, Julian. Can I walk down there yet?"
"Not yet, doctor's orders," Julian cautioned gently, sitting back down and taking her hand. "They want you to rest for at least another twenty-four hours. But I can wheel you down in a chair this afternoon if your blood pressure stays normal."
Before Clara could answer, the sharp buzz of Julian’s cell phone broke the quiet of the room. Julian pulled the device from his trouser pocket, his expression souring instantly when he saw the screen. It was a push notification from his mobile banking app, followed immediately by an incoming call from his personal private banker.
"Who is it?" Clara asked, noticing the sudden tension in his shoulders.
"Hold on," Julian murmured, swiping to answer the call and putting it on speaker so Clara could hear. "This is Julian Sterling."
"Mr. Sterling, good morning, I apologize for disturbing you so early," the voice of his private banker, Mr. Henderson, came through the speaker. His tone was distinctly stiff and nervous. "I'm calling on urgent instructions from Sterling Holdings corporate compliance."
Julian frowned, sitting up straighter. "What are you talking about, Henderson? I'm on personal leave."
"Sir, your personal accounts, credit lines, and investment portfolios have been flagged and temporarily frozen under corporate audit review," Henderson explained rapidly, clearly uncomfortable delivering the news. "Furthermore, the automatic medical trust allocations linked to your family healthcare plan have been suspended pending verification of board authorization."

Julian’s blood ran cold. "Suspended? That’s my personal trust fund! My daughter is currently in the NICU on life support, and you're telling me my accounts are frozen?"
"I'm just executing the directive sent down from the executive board, Mr. Sterling," Henderson replied defensively. "Authorized by Mrs. Eleanor Sterling."
