Chapter 12: An Unlikely Ally

Julian’s fists remained clenched so tightly his fingernails dug deep into his palms, drawing tiny beads of blood. The temptation to lunge across the desk and throttle his mother crossed his mind for a fraction of a second, but he knew physical violence would only hand her the ultimate victory. She wanted him to act the savage so she could justify destroying him legally.
"You're a monster, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice flat, devoid of any remaining filial respect. "You have no heart, no soul, just a balance sheet."
Eleanor didn't blink. "History remembers the conquerors, Julian, not the sentimentalists. Now get out of my study. You have decisions to make."
Julian turned on his heel and stormed out of the room, slamming the heavy oak doors behind him with a crash that rattled the sconces on the wall. He strode down the grand hallway, the anger burning in his chest turning into a cold, calculated strategy. He couldn't beat Eleanor at her own game using her rules, but he hadn't exhausted all his options yet.
As he reached the marble foyer, a soft voice called out from the shadows of the formal parlor.
"Julian. Wait."
Julian stopped, turning to see Alyssa stepping out from the archway. She had left her tablet in the study, and her expression was no longer the smug mask she wore around Eleanor.
"What do you want, Alyssa? Come to gloat?" Julian snapped, his hand resting on the brass handle of the front door.
Alyssa walked slowly toward him, keeping her voice low. "No. I came to tell you that you're playing the game wrong."
Julian scoffed. "Enlighten me. Are you going to tell me to sign my life away to your corporate puppet master?"
"No," Alyssa said, looking around the empty foyer before stepping closer. "Eleanor thinks she is untouchable because she holds the majority voting shares through the primary family trust. But she made a critical oversight when she restructured the international holdings last year."
Julian narrowed his eyes, suspicious. "What kind of oversight?"
"She transferred a controlling stake of the subsidiary holding company—the one funding the Asian acquisition—into a joint venture under your late father’s independent estate trust," Alyssa explained quickly, her eyes darting toward the study doors. "Technically, because your father’s will named you as the primary co-executor upon your thirtieth birthday, those shares bypass Eleanor’s direct control."
Julian stared at her, stunned. "My father's estate trust? I thought Eleanor liquidated that years ago."
"She tried," Alyssa said, a faint, cynical smile touching her lips. "She thought she did. But your father was smarter than she gave him credit for. He anticipated her ruthlessness and locked those assets away behind a dual-signature requirement that requires either your signature or a probate court order to unlock."

Julian felt a sudden, frantic spark of hope. "Why are you telling me this, Alyssa? You're Eleanor’s legal consultant. If she finds out you leaked this, she'll ruin you."
Alyssa looked away, her gaze hardening. "Eleanor is a tyrant, Julian. She believes everyone is disposable, including me. I’ve spent five years helping her build this empire only to realize I'm just another piece on her board to be sacrificed when convenient. If you take those subsidiary shares, you can bypass her freeze entirely and fund your daughter's care independently."
