Chapter 2: Threshold of Inquiry

Officer Miller’s leather boots crunched softly on the ceramic fragments as he stepped further into the expansive living room. His presence instantly altered the room’s fragile equilibrium. Eleanor Sterling smoothed down the lapels of her patterned pantsuit, her posture remaining rigid, though a subtle twitch in her jaw betrayed her annoyance at the interruption.

"Is there a problem here, Officer?" Eleanor asked, her tone dripping with aristocratic condescension, as if police intervention beneath her roof was a personal insult.

Miller bypassed Eleanor, directing his gaze downward to Julian and Clara. He knelt slightly, maintaining a respectful distance while assessing the physical state of the pregnant woman. Clara’s breathing remained shallow, her fingers clutching Julian’s forearms for dear life. The physical distress etched across her face was undeniable, a stark contrast to the sterile luxury of the estate.

"We received an anonymous call reporting a domestic disturbance and potential medical emergency at this address," Miller explained, pulling a small notepad from his breast pocket. His eyes flicked toward Alyssa, who stood calmly by the floor-to-ceiling windows, still holding her untouched champagne. "Ma'am, do you reside here?"

Alyssa took a slow, deliberate sip of her champagne before answering. Her voice was smooth, cultured, and entirely devoid of panic. "I am Alyssa Vance, a family associate and legal consultant. We were simply having a family discussion. Tempers flared, as they often do in high-stress environments. No laws have been broken."

Julian glared at Alyssa, his teeth gritted so hard his jaw ached. Sweat beaded on his forehead, catching the recessed lighting of the ceiling. "This isn't just a discussion, Miller. My wife is in physical distress, and my mother just threatened the safety of my unborn child. We need an ambulance, not an interrogation."

"Julian, watch your tone," Eleanor warned, her voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register. "Do not invite outsiders to air our private grievances."

"Mother, shut up!" Julian roared, the volume of his voice shocking even himself. He turned back to Clara, smoothing her blonde hair away from her damp forehead. "Hold on, sweetheart. The paramedics are on their way. I called them right before the door opened."

Clara shook her head, tears spilling over her lashes. "Julian, the pain... it’s not just stress. Something is wrong."

Miller’s professional demeanor hardened. He stepped toward the arched doorway and spoke into his shoulder radio, requesting an expedited paramedic unit. He cast a sharp glance back at Eleanor and Alyssa. The warmth of the room had vanished, replaced by the chilling realization that the Sterling family secrets were about to be dragged into the unforgiving light of day.
