Chapter 3: The Ambulance Lights

The flashing red and blue strobes of the ambulance painted the white columns of the Sterling mansion in frantic, rhythmic pulses. The harsh emergency lighting cut through the expensive drapery, casting long, distorted shadows across the Persian rug where Clara still lay. The sharp, piercing wail of the siren had just cut out, leaving behind a heavy, anxious silence that was punctuated only by Clara’s soft, ragged moans.
Two paramedics rushed through the wide front doors, their heavy medical bags clanking against the marble floor. They moved with practiced efficiency, bypassing Eleanor, who stood rigidly with her arms crossed over her patterned pantsuit, and Alyssa, who had finally set her champagne glass down on a mahogany side table.
"Clear some space, please," the lead paramedic instructed, dropping to his knees beside Clara. He immediately reached for a blood pressure cuff while his partner unlatched an oxygen mask.
Julian scrambled backward just enough to give them working room, but his hands remained outstretched, hovering over Clara’s legs as if he could physically shield her from further harm. Sweat continued to trace paths down his temples, mixing with the dust from the shattered bowl that still littered the floor.
"Her blood pressure is dangerously high, and she’s contracting prematurely," the paramedic said sharply, looking up at Julian. "Are you the husband?"
"Yes, I'm Julian. Is she going to be okay? The baby—is the baby okay?" Julian’s voice cracked, the raw vulnerability stripping away the polished facade of the wealthy corporate heir.
"We need to transport her immediately to St. Jude’s Memorial," the paramedic replied, already securing Clara onto a collapsible gurney with swift, secure straps. "Sir, you can ride in the back with her, but you need to stay calm."
Clara reached out, her fingers catching the fabric of Julian’s white shirt, leaving a small smudge of dust and sweat. "Julian, don't let them..." She couldn't finish the sentence, a fresh wave of pain forcing her eyes shut as a soft sob escaped her lips.
"I'm right here. I'm not leaving you, I swear," Julian promised, his voice trembling as he gripped her hand tightly.

As the medical team wheeled the gurney toward the exit, Eleanor stepped forward, blocking their path for a fraction of a second. Her face was a mask of cold calculation. "Julian, remember what we discussed. If you let this theatrical emergency derail the merger meeting tomorrow morning, the board will strip your voting rights. Handle your wife, but don't forget your obligations."
Julian stared at his mother, a look of utter disbelief and deep disgust flashing across his features. He didn't dignify her demand with a word. He simply shouldered past her, following the gurney out into the night, leaving Eleanor and Alyssa standing alone in the silent, glittering ruins of the living room.
