Chapter 8

The grand ballroom of the luxury downtown hotel buzzed with the frantic energy of high society. Photographers clustered tightly behind the velvet ropes, their camera flashes casting strobing geometric patterns across the gilded walls and mirrored pillars. Invited guests in designer evening wear sipped champagne and traded gossip about the digital empire’s meteoric rise under its new sole leadership. At the center of the attention stood Clara, radiant in a crimson evening gown that echoed the red blazer she wore the day she swung the mallet. She held court with practiced grace, accepting congratulatory handshakes and offering warm, calculated smiles to every journalist who approached her.

Clara felt entirely secure. The police had long since closed the investigation into the suspension bridge collapse, ruling it an unfortunate and tragic accident caused by unforeseen structural fatigue. Her rival was resting peacefully at the bottom of a ravine, buried beneath mountain mud, leaving Clara free to claim the throne she believed she had rightfully earned all along. As she excused herself to prepare for her keynote presentation on the main stage, a brief flicker of unease crossed her mind—a phantom sensation of cold mountain air brushing against the back of her neck—but she quickly dismissed it with a confident laugh.

At the rear of the grand ballroom, half-hidden in the deep shadows beneath the balcony overhang, stood a solitary figure in a dark, hooded trench coat. Selena watched Clara mount the elevated stage, taking center stage beneath a massive LED screen displaying the corporate logo in bold, glowing letters. The applause was deafening, a roaring wave of manufactured admiration that filled the cavernous room. Selena kept her hands buried deep in her pockets, her breath steady and her heart rate remaining at an unnatural, resting plateau. She didn't wear a disguise to hide from the crowd; she wore it to observe the final moments of Clara’s illusion before the curtain came crashing down.

Leo sat in a parked van three blocks away, his laptop connected directly to the hotel’s internal broadcast network via an encrypted relay, waiting for Selena’s final signal. Selena raised her right hand, holding her cracked smartphone firmly in her palm. The screen glowed with a single blinking icon, ready to transmit the command that would dismantle Clara’s world in an instant.

Clara stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone as the applause slowly died down to an expectant hush. She smiled brightly toward the cameras, preparing to deliver a poignant speech dedicated to her fallen partner—a final, theatrical performance designed to cement her legacy. Selena’s fingers hovered over the screen, her eyes locked onto Clara’s face across the crowded room. The moment of reckoning had finally arrived, and there was no turning back for either of them.
