Chapter 5: Digital Footprints

Working through the night in the dim, blue-lit sanctuary of Leo’s apartment, Selena and her loyal friend mapped out the sprawling digital infrastructure that Clara had hastily assembled. Leo’s fingers danced across his dual keyboards, bypassing corporate firewalls and accessing encrypted backend servers belonging to the management agency that represented both women. What they uncovered confirmed Selena’s darkest suspicions: the bridge collapse wasn't an opportunistic crime of passion; it was a meticulously planned corporate assassination orchestrated months in advance.
"Look at this audit trail," Leo whispered, pointing a finger at a highlighted line of metadata on his screen. "Two weeks before your scheduled trip to the mountain reserve, Clara’s private assistant transferred a substantial sum to a third-party engineering contractor known for maintaining rural tourist attractions. They bypassed standard safety inspections on that specific glass-floor section."
Selena leaned closer, her eyes scanning the financial ledgers. Every transaction was meticulously documented, hiding behind layers of shell companies designed to protect Clara’s primary assets. However, corporate greed often left sloppy trails when executed in a rush. Clara had rushed the takeover immediately following the reported accident, leaving digital breadcrumbs that connected her personal banking accounts directly to the maintenance payoff.
"She left the front door wide open because she thought I was rotting at the bottom of a ravine," Selena said, a faint, humorless smile touching the corners of her lips. "People who achieve success through deception always underestimate the intelligence of the people they step over."
Leo admired her composure, though an underlying current of anxiety lingered in his posture. "If we release these documents to the authorities right now, the police might arrest her, but corporate lawyers will likely drag it out for years. She’ll claim it was a clerical error or a disgruntled employee framing her. We need something undeniable—a smoking gun that destroys her reputation publicly before the legal system even gets involved."
Selena nodded slowly in agreement. A standard legal battle would allow Clara to play the victim, shedding manufactured tears on morning talk shows while her high-priced legal team buried the evidence. No, a public execution of character wasn't enough; Clara needed to experience the exact same helplessness, the same public humiliation and loss of control that she had inflicted upon Selena on that suspension bridge.
"We don't go to the police yet," Selena instructed, her tone leaving no room for argument. "We set a trap. We let Clara believe she has won complete control of the brand, and then we invite her to a live-streamed anniversary event celebrating her solo ascension. On her biggest night, when the whole world is watching, we pull the rug out from under her."

Leo swallowed hard, realizing the magnitude of the game they were entering. "And if she realizes you’re still alive before then?"
Selena stood up, walking slowly to the window and looking out at the sprawling city lights below. "She won't. Because ghosts don't walk among the living until they’re ready to claim their vengeance."
