Chapter 3: Returning to the Grid

The flickering neon lights of the mountain-base truck stop felt blinding after hours spent navigating the pitch-black forest. Hiding behind a rusted shipping container at the edge of the gravel parking lot, Selena assessed her reflection in the dark, greasy window of an abandoned service bay. Her pink off-the-shoulder dress was stiff with dried mud, her hair was tangled with leaves, and her skin bore the pale, ethereal glow of someone who had returned from the dead. She looked less like a living influencer and more like an urban legend. Yet, her eyes burned with an intense, calculated focus that commanded attention.

She needed to acquire clean clothes and temporary shelter without drawing the suspicion of local authorities or alerting Clara’s network. Reaching into the pocket of her ruined dress, Selena pulled out a slim, waterproof cardholder containing a backup credit card and her driver’s license. She had always prided herself on being prepared for emergencies, though she never imagined this particular scenario. Wait patiently in the shadows until the diner parking lot thinned out, she told herself, maintaining strict emotional control.

When the last long-haul trucker settled inside the diner for coffee and pie, Selena moved swiftly. She slipped into the unattended laundry room behind the motel adjacent to the truck stop, where guests often left spare items drying overnight. Snagging a dark oversized hoodie and a pair of worn denim jeans from a communal basket, she changed quickly in the dim stall, wrapping her muddy dress in a plastic bag she found near the industrial washing machines. She tied her long pink hair into a tight, utilitarian ponytail, effectively obscuring her distinct profile.

Stepping out into the cool night air, Selena felt human again, though the profound chill in her chest remained unabated. She used a payphone outside the laundry facility—preferring to avoid activating her smartphone’s GPS prematurely—and dialed the number of an old college friend who lived on the outskirts of the nearby city. Leo was a quiet, analytical software engineer who had always kept his distance from the superficial influencer world, making him the only person she could genuinely trust. When Leo’s sleepy voice answered on the third ring, Selena didn’t waste time with pleasantries or dramatic explanations.

"Leo, it’s Selena," she said, her voice steady and deliberate. "I need your help, and I need you to promise you won't tell a single soul that you’ve heard from me." There was a long, stunned pause on the other end of the line before Leo whispered his reply, setting the wheels of her calculated vengeance into motion.
