Chapter 6: The Phantom Presence

While Leo focused on dismantling Clara’s digital defenses from behind the safety of his monitors, Selena took her first physical risk since returning from the dead. Dressed in nondescript athletic gear with a baseball cap pulled low over her face, she navigated the bustling downtown district where Clara’s newly acquired headquarters occupied the top floor of a sleek glass skyscraper. The transition from the quiet mountain forest to the sensory overload of the metropolis felt jarring, but Selena’s senses remained preternaturally sharp. She noticed every security camera angle, every pedestrian glancing at their phones, and every subtle shift in the autumn wind.

She entered the lobby of the corporate building during the busy lunch hour, blending seamlessly with a group of freelance graphic designers carrying portfolio cases. Passing through the turnstiles required an active employee badge, but Selena simply lingered near the elevators, waiting for an executive-level assistant to swipe through. As the heavy glass doors glided open, she slipped inside the crowded car, pressing the button for the thirty-fifth floor—the executive suite where Clara now reigned supreme.

When the doors opened, Selena stepped out onto polished white marble floors framed by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. The atmosphere on the top floor was electric with corporate ambition. Staff members rushed back and forth holding tablet devices, discussing campaign metrics, brand sponsorships, and the upcoming anniversary gala celebrating Clara’s solo rebranding. Selena kept her head down, walking with quiet confidence toward Clara’s private office at the end of the hall.

Through the frosted glass panels of the double doors, she could see Clara’s unmistakable silhouette pacing back and forth, holding a sleek smartphone to her ear while gesturing animatedly with her free hand. Clara looked prosperous and radiant, draped in a tailored red blazer that matched the one she wore on the day of the murder. The sight of her former friend acting so casually triumphant sent a fresh surge of cold energy through Selena’s veins.

Without hesitation, Selena walked up to the side table near the executive entrance where outgoing mail and courier packages sat stacked neatly. She pulled a small, unmarked USB drive from her pocket—pre-loaded by Leo with a benign script designed to ping Clara’s secure local network—and slipped it discreetly beneath a stack of glossy marketing brochures. The drive would silently map every private file on Clara’s local workstation, giving them direct access to her personal correspondence and private photo archives.

Just as Selena turned to leave, the office door clicked open. Clara stepped out into the hallway, pausing to address her assistant. Selena froze, stepping behind a decorative indoor ficus tree and holding her breath. For a terrifying second, Clara turned her head directly toward the plant, her dark-red hair catching the natural light. Clara’s eyes narrowed slightly as if sensing an unfamiliar presence in the sterile air, her gaze scanning the hallway with a sudden, uncharacteristic paranoia. Selena kept her body completely still, her heart beating with a slow, controlled rhythm that defied human biology. After a tense moment, Clara dismissed the feeling with a sharp shake of her head and walked back inside, completely unaware that her ghost had just walked through her halls.
