Chapter 9: The Shockwave

The morning sun broke over Capitol Hill, casting long shadows across the marble columns of the Senate office buildings. But the warm light did little to dispel the electric, chaotic energy humming through the corridors of power. By 8:00 AM, the uncompressed data package mirrored from the Swiss proxy server had landed on the desks of every major investigative newsroom in North America. By 8:15 AM, it was trending globally across every digital platform.
Senator Eleanor Vance sat behind her grand mahogany desk in her Georgetown study, watching the morning news broadcast with a gaze of unadulterated horror. The television screen displayed clear, unedited footage of the Vanguard Bio-Research underground laboratories—the cages, the illicit mutagenic vials, and most damningly, Eleanor herself authorizing the biological purge of Sector Four while wearing her signature red pantsuit.
The news anchor’s voice echoed relentlessly through the quiet room: *""Breaking news this morning: Leaked documents and high-definition security footage released by an international whistleblower collective have implicated sitting Senator Eleanor Vance in the illicit operation of unauthorized biological weapons testing facilities...""*
The intercom on Eleanor’s desk buzzed frantically. She pressed the speaker button with a trembling finger.
""Senator Vance!"" her chief of staff yelled, his voice cracking with panic. ""The Department of Justice has just issued an emergency arrest warrant. The Capitol Police are securing the perimeter of the building, and the ethics committee has called an emergency vote for an immediate expulsion hearing. We are getting crushed!""
Eleanor did not answer. She slowly released the intercom button, her hand shaking violently. The carefully constructed empire of influence, bribes, and corporate protection she had spent twenty years building had collapsed in less than fifteen minutes. She stood up, walking toward the tall windows, only to see a phalanx of federal marshals and news vans swarming the front steps of her estate. The net had finally closed, and there were no more technicalities left to exploit.
Meanwhile, miles away in the secure federal bunker, Evelyn Vance watched the same broadcast on a small, battered tablet. She sat on the edge of the cot, watching Chloe, who was finally sleeping soundly without the haunting tics of terror that had plagued her since they escaped the facility.
Agent Thorne walked over, handing Evelyn a steaming cup of black coffee. ""The attorney general's office just contacted me directly,"" Thorne said quietly. ""Senator Vance’s assets have been frozen, and her legal team has stopped returning her calls. The warrants are expanding to include the entire Vanguard board of directors.""

Evelyn took the cup, wrapping her hands around the warm ceramic without drinking. ""It's not over yet, Marcus,"" she said, looking up at the agent. ""Institutions don't just roll over when their figureheads fall. The people who built Vanguard are still out there, hiding behind shell companies and classified defense budgets.""
""True,"" Thorne acknowledged, pulling up a chair opposite her. ""But for the first time, they're playing defense. The public knows the truth. The narrative belongs to us now.""
