Chapter 10: The Tribunal

The federal district courtroom in downtown Washington was packed to capacity, the gallery overflowing with journalists, defense contractors, and curious spectators straining for a glimpse of the proceedings. At the defense table sat Senator Eleanor Vance, stripped of her immaculate red pantsuit and forced to wear standard orange detention fatigues. Her posture remained rigid, but the arrogant smugness that had defined her public persona was entirely gone, replaced by a mask of bitter exhaustion.
At the prosecution table, Evelyn Vance sat in her crisp military dress uniform, her ribbons gleaming beneath the harsh courtroom lights, flanked by Agent Marcus Thorne and federal prosecutors. Chloe sat safely in the secured gallery between two federal marshals, watching the proceedings with steady, watchful eyes.
The presiding judge, a severe-looking federal magistrate named Harrison Cole, adjusted his spectacles and looked down from the bench, his expression grave. ""This court has reviewed the digital evidence, the forensic chain of custody documents, and the witness testimonies detailing the illicit operations conducted within Vanguard Bio-Research Sector Four. The charges against the defendant are matters of severe national and international security.""
Eleanor’s defense attorney stood up, clearing his throat nervously. ""Your Honor, we move to suppress the primary digital exhibits on the grounds of unlawful acquisition and potential tampering by military personnel acting outside standard federal jurisdiction.""
Judge Cole did not even let the attorney finish his sentence. He raised a hand, silencing him instantly. ""Motion denied, Counselor. The digital evidence has been authenticated by three independent federal laboratories and mirrored across international networks. The court finds the chain of custody entirely sound.""
A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. Eleanor closed her eyes, her shoulders slumping just an inch as the reality of her legal jeopardy set in.
""Furthermore,"" Judge Cole continued, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls, ""the court recognizes Sergeant First Class Evelyn Vance not merely as a witness, but as a primary protector of federal evidence under extraordinary duress. Sergeant Vance, the court invites your testimony regarding the events of the night in question.""
Evelyn stood up from the prosecution table. She buttoned her jacket, adjusted her belt, and walked with measured, disciplined strides toward the witness stand. She placed her hand on the Bible, took the oath without hesitation, and sat down in the wooden witness chair. She looked out across the courtroom, her gaze locking directly onto Eleanor Vance. Eleanor raised her head, glaring back with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.

""State your name and military designation for the record,"" the lead prosecutor instructed gently.
""Sergeant First Class Evelyn Vance, United States Army,"" she stated, her voice clear, resonant, and completely devoid of fear. ""I am here to testify on behalf of the truth, the victims of Vanguard Bio-Research, and every family whose lives were threatened by corruption hiding behind a badge of office.""
