Chapter 4: The Safehouse Protocol

The subterranean bunker smelled of stale ozone, damp concrete, and decades of dormant electronics. Fluorescent lights flickered to life overhead as Agent Thorne entered the master access code into the blast-door keypad. Evelyn guided Chloe down the metal steps, the girl walking like a sleepwalker, her eyes hollow and her body battered by adrenaline depletion and shock.
""We have medical supplies in the secondary bay,"" Thorne said, tossing a set of keys to a junior agent who had accompanied them. ""Get her cleaned up and checked for chemical exposure. Vanguard projects often left residual biological contaminants in the lower sub-levels.""
Evelyn gently steered Chloe toward the cot in the corner of the secure medical station. She unbuttoned the bloodstained grey dress with practiced tenderness, washing away the grime and dried blood with warm saline wipes. Beneath the dirt, minor bruises marred the girl's pale skin, physical reminders of her desperate scramble through the facility's air ducts.
""I'm sorry, Aunt Ev,"" Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air filtration system. ""I tried to hide the journal like dad said, but the men in the red suits... they found it in the floorboards.""
""You did everything right, Chloe,"" Evelyn reassured her, keeping her voice calm and steady despite the fury burning inside her chest. ""Your father would be so proud of you. You survived, and you brought the proof out with you. That's all that matters now.""
As Chloe drifted into a medicated sleep, Evelyn stepped back into the central command room where Thorne was hard at work connecting her seized smartphone to an isolated forensic workstation. The glowing monitors cast a ghostly blue light across the agent's weathered face.
""The file transfer is complete,"" Thorne announced, tapping a key on the mechanical keyboard. ""The security footage you recorded is pristine. Audio, facial recognition signatures, biometric timestamps—it's an airtight case against the senator and her primary executives.""
""An airtight case that means nothing if the servers at Vanguard mysteriously catch fire tonight,"" Evelyn said, leaning over the console. ""You and I both know how powerful defense contractors operate when they're cornered. They'll burn the whole facility to the ground to erase the physical evidence.""
Thorne sighed, rubbing his tired eyes. ""The local precinct has already released the senator on a technicality signed by a corrupted circuit judge. She's out on bond, and her legal team is moving to suppress our evidence under the state secrets act.""
Evelyn stared at the blinking cursor on the screen. The legal system was moving too slowly, weighted down by procedural delays and backdoor political influence. If they waited for a trial, Eleanor Vance would dismantle every witness and bury every digital trace before a jury ever saw the footage.
""We need to go public with the backup before they can suppress it,"" Evelyn stated firmly.
May you like
Thorne shook his head. ""If you leak it independently, you violate federal evidence protocols, and you become a fugitive alongside your niece. The courts won't protect you then.""
""The courts aren't the ones keeping us alive right now,"" Evelyn replied, her gaze hardening. ""We need to set a trap.""
