Chapter 1: The Corridor

The sterile white hallway of the Vanguard Bio-Research facility hummed with the low, ominous resonance of an enterprise collapsing under the weight of its own arrogance. Sergeant First Class Evelyn Vance stood firm, her combat boots planted squarely on the polished linoleum. Her military dress green uniform, adorned with earned ribbons and crisp sergeant chevrons, felt like armor against the corruption bleeding through the floorboards. With her left arm, she held back her fifteen-year-old niece, Chloe. The girl’s dark hair was matted with sweat and dirt, and her simple grey dress bore dark, jagged smears of blood—not her own, but the grim proof of what she had survived inside Sector Four.
Chloe’s chest heaved with ragged breaths. Her eyes, wide and bloodshot, darted toward the approaching figures at the far end of the hall. ""They let me away!"" Chloe sobbed, her voice cracking with the lingering terror of a child who had witnessed things no human should ever see. Evelyn squeezed her shoulder, a silent anchor in a rising tide of madness.
Marching toward them with predatory confidence was Senator Eleanor Vance, dressed in her signature immaculate bright red pantsuit. Eleanor’s blonde hair was pulled back into a severe bun, matching her aggressive, smug expression. Behind her marched a detail of private corporate security operatives wearing dark tactical vests and blank, menacing expressions. Eleanor closed the distance, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor, a sound that carried the weight of absolute impunity. She stopped a few feet away, her lip curling in a cold sneer as she looked down at the terrified teenager clinging to Evelyn's uniform.
""No one will believe her,"" Eleanor spat, her voice laced with venomous dismissiveness. She gestured dismissively toward Chloe. ""A hysterical teenager running from a research accident? The press will eat it up as a hallucination, and the board will bury it before sunrise. Step aside, Sergeant, unless you want your career to end in a court-martial.""
Evelyn did not flinch. She had buried her husband in Arlington, and she had spent the last decade watching the military-industrial complex swallow whistleblowers whole. But she had prepared for this moment. Slowly, deliberately, Evelyn raised her right hand, encased in a dark leather tactical glove. Clutched firmly in her grasp was her government-issued smartphone. The screen illuminated the dim corridor with a harsh blue glow, playing back a continuous, unedited loop of security footage from the laboratory corridor behind them. On the display, Eleanor could clearly see her own face giving the order to initiate the experimental purge.
Evelyn locked eyes with her corrupt sister-in-law, her voice dropping to a quiet, lethal register that cut through the sterile air. ""You threatened the wrong family.""
Before Eleanor could formulate a response, the heavy reinforced security doors behind the corporate guards hissed open. Federal law enforcement officers poured into the hallway, flashing their badges and drawing standard-issue sidearms with practiced precision. The lead federal agent stepped forward, his eyes fixed squarely on the senator.

""We heard everything,"" the agent declared, his voice echoing off the tile walls.
Eleanor Vance stood completely frozen, her mouth hanging wide open in utter shock and panic. The illusion of her untouchable empire fractured in real time. Evelyn exhaled a slow, controlled breath, feeling the heavy burden of the past hour settle into resolve. This was only the beginning.
