Chapter 8: The Digital Torrent

The bunker air was thick with smoke, ozone, and the coppery scent of adrenaline-fueled panic. Evelyn rushed to the console, kneeling beside Thorne, who was groaning as he pushed himself up against the desk. She checked the monitor with frantic urgency. The progress bar crept forward with agonizing slowness.

*Ninety-two percent.*

""Are they still connected to the local repeater?"" Evelyn asked, scanning the perimeter monitors for signs of secondary reinforcement teams.

""I severed the local bridge just before they breached the door,"" Thorne wheezed, wiping blood from his forehead with the back of his sleeve. ""They're flying blind now. But our satellite uplink is tethered directly to an independent server in Switzerland. Once it hits one hundred percent, the files are mirrored across a decentralized network that no government or corporation can scrub.""

From the corner of the room, Chloe crawled out from behind the heavy steel medical cart, her face smeared with dust, her eyes fixed on Evelyn. ""Is it over, Aunt Ev?""

""Almost, sweetie,"" Evelyn said, keeping her hand resting on the grip of her rifle as she watched the progress bar tick upward.

*Ninety-eight percent.*

Suddenly, the console screen flashed a harsh, warning amber. A new window popped up, displaying an automated system override originating from a secure Department of Justice mainframe. A text prompt blinked across the screen: *CRITICAL ERROR: UNAUTHORIZED DATA EXFILTRATION DETECTED. INITIATING REMOTE WIPE PROTOCOL.*

""They're trying to remotely format the drive through our own backup connection!"" Thorne yelled, panic bleeding into his voice as he slammed his hands back onto the keyboard, trying to build a firewall. ""The Justice Department's internal servers have been compromised by the senator's backdoor access codes!""

""Can you block it?"" Evelyn demanded, stepping closer to the screen.

""I can isolate the terminal, but if I disconnect the network bridge now, the upload stops at ninety-nine percent!"" Thorne shouted, sweat pouring down his face. ""The final archive index won't compile! The media won't be able to open the raw video formats without the index!""

Evelyn stared at the blinking wipe countdown: *T-MINUS 30 SECONDS.*

She looked at the upload progress: *Ninety-nine percent.*

She understood the impossible math. If they cut the connection, they kept a corrupt, unreadable file that wouldn't hold up in a court of public opinion or a federal tribunal. If they let the wipe protocol finish, everything they had suffered through in Sector Four vanished into the digital void, leaving Senator Eleanor Vance completely untouchable once again.

""Let the upload finish,"" Evelyn said quietly.

""Evelyn, the wipe will destroy our local drives too!"" Thorne protested.

""Do it, Marcus!"" Evelyn commanded, her voice cutting through the panic with absolute authority. ""Trust the proxy.""

Thorne slammed the enter key, routing all remaining system power into the Swiss proxy server just as the countdown reached zero. The monitor screen flickered violently, turning pitch black as the local system storage was instantly scrubbed clean by the remote wipe command. The bunker went dead silent, save for the hum of the emergency generator.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The screens remained dark. Thorne slumped back in his chair, staring at the dead monitor with a look of profound defeat.

Then, the emergency satellite communicator on the wall chirped with a bright, high-pitched chime. A green LED light flickered on.

Thorne scrambled to check the external ping log. A broad smile broke across his exhausted face. ""Transfer complete. The archive index compiled successfully three seconds before the wipe protocol executed. The files are live across forty independent international news agencies.""
