Chapter 3: Shadows on the Highway

The black federal transport van cut through the midnight fog, its tires hissing against the damp asphalt of Interstate 95. Inside the reinforced cabin, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Evelyn sat on the narrow bench seat, keeping her arm firmly around Chloe, who had finally fallen into an exhausted, fitful sleep against her shoulder. Across from them, Agent Marcus Thorne studied a ruggedized laptop displaying encrypted case files and facility blueprints.

""We intercepted encrypted transmissions leaving the Vanguard facility moments after our arrival,"" Thorne said without looking up from the screen. ""Corporate legal teams are already filing emergency injunctions, trying to block our seizure of the primary server banks.""

""They'll try to claim national security exemptions,"" Evelyn replied, her voice steady and controlled. ""My late husband worked on those biological protocols before his death. He left notes indicating that Vanguard was developing unauthorized mutagenic pathogens under the guise of agricultural enhancements.""

Thorne glanced up, his expression grim. ""That explains why the senator was willing to authorize the purge of Sector Four. If those files go public, it won't just ruin a political career; it will trigger federal conspiracy indictments reaching deep into the Department of Defense.""

Evelyn stared out the tinted window at the passing highway lights, which blurred into streaks of gold and red against the dark backdrop of the pine forests. She thought about the quiet suburban life she and Chloe had tried to build after her brother's mysterious death six months ago. They had thought they were safe, that the shadows of military contracting were far behind them. But Vanguard’s reach had proven inescapable, dragging Chloe into their underground laboratories in a calculated attempt to retrieve her father's encrypted research journal.

The van took a sharp turn, exiting the main highway onto an unpaved logging road flanked by dense timber. The suspension creaked as the vehicle navigated the rough terrain toward a decommissioned federal communication bunker. Safehouses were only as secure as the people running them, and Evelyn knew she couldn't rely solely on institutional protection. The corruption extended too far up the chain of command.

""How long can we stay at the bunker before they trace the communication signatures?"" Evelyn asked, shifting her weight slightly to avoid waking Chloe.

""Long enough to download the complete server backup to secure offline drives,"" Thorne answered, closing his laptop. ""But Sergeant, I need to be entirely transparent with you. Once the attorney general's office reviews the footage on your phone, you and your niece become high-priority targets. Senator Vance has friends who don't play by courtroom rules.""

""Neither do I,"" Evelyn replied quietly.

The van rolled to a halt inside a subterranean concrete garage beneath the bunker. The heavy steel doors hissed shut behind them, sealing off the outside world. As the vehicle engine died, the silence of the bunker settled over them, a heavy, suffocating quiet that promised neither safety nor peace, only a temporary reprieve before the storm broke.
