Chapter 13: The Confrontation

Evelyn kept her rifle trained squarely on Julian Vance’s chest, her finger resting lightly against the trigger guard. The plush cabin smelled of expensive leather, cologne, and the stale sweat of a man who realized his escape route had just evaporated.

""Hands on the armrests, Julian,"" Evelyn commanded, her voice cold and measured. ""No sudden movements.""

Julian slowly set his crystal glass down on the mahogany side table, keeping his hands visible in front of him. He offered a thin, cynical smile. ""You think arresting me changes anything, Evelyn? Vanguard is just a corporate shell. The research protocols, the biological assets, the government contracts—they're already backed up across a dozen sovereign entities that don't care about federal subpoenas or congressional hearings.""

""My husband died believing your lies about those protocols,"" Evelyn said, stepping further into the cabin, her eyes burning with righteous fury. ""And you tried to use Chloe as a lab rat to clean up your mess. That ends today.""

""Your husband was a visionary who lacked the stomach for necessary progress,"" Julian replied, tilting his head with infuriating arrogance. ""Science requires sacrifice, Sergeant. You of all people should understand the chain of command. Sometimes, collateral damage is the price of keeping civilization running.""

""Don't you ever talk about sacrifice,"" Evelyn snapped, stepping up to the chair and cuffing Julian's wrists with swift, practiced efficiency. She hauled him to his feet, shoving him toward the cabin door. ""You traded human lives for corporate stock options. That's not sacrifice; that's murder.""

As Evelyn escorted Julian down the aircraft stairs into the blinding sunlight of the tarmac, a phalanx of federal agents and journalists had already converged on the scene. Camera flashes illuminated the morning air like a strobe light, capturing the final architect of Vanguard Bio-Research being led away in handcuffs by a decorated military sergeant.

Julian shielded his face from the cameras, his arrogance finally cracking under the glare of public exposure. Evelyn handed him over to Agent Thorne and the federal marshals, watching as they loaded him into the back of the transport van. The circle was closed. Every major player in the conspiracy was now facing the full weight of the law.
