Chapter 9 - Ghosts of the Past

The dilapidated interior of the abandoned warehouse smelled heavily of rusted iron, damp concrete, and old motor oil. Sarah slammed the sedan doors shut with a definitive thud, cutting the engine and plunging the vehicle into a tense, echoing silence broken only by the steady drip of a leaky roof somewhere in the cavernous upper rafters.

"Sarah? What is going on here? How did you even know where we were?" Julian demanded, stepping out of the car and holding his hands out defensively as his sister turned to face them, her expression carved from stone.

Sarah didn't answer immediately. She walked around the hood of the sedan, her heavy combat boots crunching against broken glass, before stopping dead in front of Clara, who was gently coaxing a shivering Mia out of the back seat.

"Clara, I am so sorry you got dragged into Julian's corporate suicide mission," Sarah said softly, her voice losing its edge as she placed a comforting hand on Clara’s shoulder. "I tried to warn him three years ago when he started taking dirty money from Arthur Sterling to cover his bad real estate investments. He chose greed over family."

"You faked your own death," Clara whispered, staring at her sister-in-law in stunned disbelief. "Julian told us your plane went down over the Andes. He wore black to your memorial service."

"My plane didn't go down. Julian arranged for my sabotage report to be buried because I found the offshore accounts he and Arthur were using to launder money through the firm," Sarah replied, turning her piercing gaze back to Julian, her eyes flashing with cold fury. "He didn't want a whistleblower in the family, so he let me disappear into the wind to protect his reputation."

"That's a lie!" Julian shouted, stepping forward, his face dark with anger. "Arthur forged those documents! He was the one managing the books while I was focused on expansion!"

"Stop lying, Julian!" Sarah yelled back, stepping right up to his chest, refusing to back down an inch. "I have the hard drives. I have the wire transfers signed with your personal biometric authorization token. You thought I was dead, so you and Arthur used the exact same corporate shell structures to try and liquidate Mia and Leo today when the federal auditors finally started sniffing around your real estate portfolio."

Leo stepped out from behind his mother, his small face tightening with a look of profound disappointment that cut Julian deeper than any physical blow could have. "You tried to sell us out, Dad? Just to save your company?"

"No, Leo! Listen to me!" Julian pleaded, dropping to his knees so he was at eye level with his son. "I never wanted any of this. Arthur threatened you and your mother if I didn't cooperate with his plan to fake the estate liquidation. I was trying to protect you!"

"By locking me in a coffin?" Mia asked quietly, her voice trembling as she looked at her father with eyes completely devoid of childhood innocence.

Before Julian could answer, a loud, metallic screech echoed from the massive roll-up security door at the far end of the warehouse. The heavy metal barrier began to slowly rattle upward, flooding the dim interior with the harsh, blinding headlights of two black SUVs idling outside in the rain.
