Chapter 13 - Reaching the Summit

The sharp crack of Arthur’s revolver echoed off the high corrugated iron roof of the warehouse, followed instantly by Sarah gasping in pain as she fell heavily against the concrete floor, clutching her bleeding shoulder.

"Sarah!" Julian yelled, diving back toward his sister to drag her behind the protective cover of a concrete support column before Arthur could fire a second shot.

"I'm... I'm fine. Just a graze," Sarah gritted through her teeth, her face pale as she pressed her hand hard against the wound to stem the flow of blood. "Get up to the roof! Arthur's men are coming around the exterior staircase to cut off the exit!"

Julian looked up the narrow, rusted spiral staircase where Clara, Leo, and Mia were already scrambling frantically toward the heavy steel hatch leading to the roof. He could hear the heavy thud of tactical boots pounding against the exterior metal steps outside, closing in fast.

"I'm not leaving you here," Julian said firmly, grabbing Sarah by her uninjured arm and hoisting her up, half-carrying her toward the base of the tower stairs.

"Move! Go!" Sarah pushed him forward, stumbling up the first three steps under her own power.

They hauled themselves up the spiraling metal steps, the cold wind howling through the open framework as they climbed higher above the dark, cavernous floor of the warehouse. Below them, Arthur’s voice boomed through the building, amplified by anger and desperation.

"You can't run forever, Julian! The perimeter is locked down!" Arthur screamed, his footsteps echoing on the lower levels as he and his remaining guards began ascending the interior stairs in hot pursuit.

Julian pushed Clara and the children through the heavy roof hatch, scrambling out onto the flat gravel surface of the warehouse roof just as a steady, cold rain began to fall from the heavy gray sky above. The wind whipped their clothes around them, but the open air felt like salvation compared to the suffocating trap inside.

"Dad, look!" Leo shouted, pointing toward the eastern horizon.

Flashing red and blue lights were cutting through the heavy morning fog a mile down the access road—a convoy of federal law enforcement vehicles and local police cruisers speeding toward the warehouse with sirens wailing in the distance.

"They're here! The marshals made it!" Clara cried out, her face streaming with tears of sheer exhaustion and relief as she pulled Leo and Mia into a tight embrace against her chest.

"Not yet they aren't," a cold, clipped voice echoed from behind the rooftop ventilation housing.

Arthur Sterling stepped out from the shadows of the central radio tower, holding his heavy revolver steady in both hands, his tailored overcoat drenched in rain and his forehead still bandaged where Mia had struck him earlier that morning. He was completely alone, his guards apparently trapped below by the jammed interior security doors, but his eyes burned with a manic, desperate fury.

"End of the line, family man," Arthur whispered, raising the barrel directly toward Julian's chest.
