Chapter 10 - The Trap Closes

The screech of the heavy metal security door rolling upward tore through the tense atmosphere of the warehouse like a siren. Sarah cursed under her breath, spinning around and drawing a heavy-caliber pistol from her waistband with practiced, military precision.
"Get behind the concrete pillars, now!" Sarah commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority as she shoved Julian and Clara toward the massive structural supports near the back wall.
Two black SUVs rolled slowly into the cavernous warehouse, their high-beams cutting blinding shafts of white light through the floating dust motes and drifting mist. The doors of the lead vehicle opened in unison, and four armed men in tactical gear stepped out, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the room with disciplined efficiency.
"Sarah Vance. It's been a long time," a calm, amplified voice echoed from the passenger side of the second SUV.
Arthur Sterling stepped out into the glare of the headlights, wearing a fresh gray overcoat, a white bandage neatly patched over his left temple where Mia’s brass candleholder had struck him. He looked entirely composed, as if he were attending a routine board meeting rather than a armed standoff in an abandoned industrial yard.
"Arthur," Sarah said, stepping out from behind a concrete pillar, her pistol leveled steadily at the center of his chest without a single tremor in her grip. "End of the line. The federal indictment was filed an hour ago. Every bank account, shell company, and offshore asset you and Julian built has been frozen by the SEC."
Arthur smiled calmly, pausing ten feet away from her weapon. He didn't even glance at Julian or Clara. "Sarah, sweet, naive Sarah. Do you honestly believe a federal indictment matters when there are no living plaintiffs left to testify?"
"What are you talking about?" Clara demanded, stepping out from the shadows with Leo and Mia clinging tightly to her skirt, her face pale but resolute. "The police know everything. Detective Miller is compromised, but the federal authorities—"
"Detective Miller is currently filing a glowing commendation report detailing how Julian Vance, driven mad by financial ruin, attempted to eliminate his own family in a murder-suicide pact inside the Oak Ridge Chapel," Arthur interrupted smoothly, gesturing lazily toward the dark SUVs behind him. "And guess who was waiting outside to document the entire tragedy?"
From the back seat of the second SUV, a man stepped out wearing a heavy press jacket and holding a professional video camera equipped with a high-definition telephoto lens. It was Thomas Reed, the senior investigative reporter for the city's largest television network—and Arthur’s silent financial partner for the past five years.
"The footage from the chapel exterior is already uploading to the cloud, Arthur," Thomas Reed called out, tapping the side of his camera with a smug grin. "Exclusive coverage of a desperate corporate executive snapping under pressure. By evening news, the Vance family tragedy will be national headline material."
Julian stared at the reporter in absolute horror. The conspiracy wasn't just corporate; it reached into the media, the police department, and the local courts. There was no escape.
"You're going to kill us all here and call it a murder-suicide," Julian said, his voice hollow as he looked at his wife and children, realizing the full magnitude of his past mistakes. His ambition had built the very cage that was about to crush them all.
"Not quite, Julian," Arthur said, his smile fading into a cold, predatory sneer as he nodded to the tactical guards standing behind him. "Just you. The wife and kids are going to be rescued heroes who miraculously survived their father's deranged rampage. But accidents during rescue operations... well, they happen all the time."

Before Arthur could give the order to fire, the lights inside the massive warehouse abruptly flickered, buzzed loudly, and died completely, plunging the entire building into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
