Chapter 11 - Darkness Falls

The sudden loss of electricity plunged the cavernous warehouse into an inky, suffocating blackness. For a fraction of a second, the only illumination came from the blinding high-beams of the idling SUVs, casting long, grotesque shadows against the crumbling concrete walls.

"Hold your positions! Do not fire blindly!" Arthur’s voice rang out, sharp and panicked, cutting through the sudden silence as the tactical guards scrambled to switch on their weapon-mounted flashlights.

"Move, now!" Sarah hissed in the dark, her hand grabbing Julian by the collar of his suit jacket and yanking him hard toward the side exit while Clara ushered the children into the narrow recess of a freight elevator shaft.

Bright beams of tactical white light began to sweep frantically across the warehouse floor, slicing through the drifting dust like laser sights. A heavy-caliber assault rifle barked once, the deafening concussive blast echoing off the metal rafters as a round splintered the concrete pillar mere inches from Clara’s head.

"Mom! I'm scared!" Mia whimpered, burying her face against Clara's shoulder as they crouched behind a rusted steel shipping container.

"Stay down, baby. Don't look back," Clara whispered fiercely, her knuckles white as she wrapped her arms around both children, shielding them with her own body.

Across the warehouse, Sarah fired two calculated shots toward the source of the muzzle flash, the sharp cracks of her pistol temporarily blinding the guards with their own reflected glare. "Arthur, you're done! The federal marshals are five minutes out! You can't shoot your way out of this!"

"Find them!" Arthur screamed, his voice losing its corporate polish, replaced by a desperate, feral edge. "I don't care if you have to tear this building down brick by brick, find those children!"

Julian didn't run with Sarah. In the split-second confusion of the blackout, he peeled away from the group, sprinting toward the open hood of the lead SUV idling near the center of the floor. His mind raced back to the corporate security protocols he had helped design years ago for the firm's transport vehicles—protocols that included an emergency master kill-switch tied directly to the vehicle's onboard computer.

"Julian, what are you doing? Get back here!" Sarah hissed from the shadows, but he ignored her.

He popped the hood latch of the SUV, threw the heavy metal panel upward, and began frantically ripping at the color-coded wiring harnesses beneath, searching for the secondary fuel-injection bypass.

"Hey! Over there! Someone's by the vehicle!" a tactical guard shouted, sweeping his weapon-mounted flashlight directly toward Julian's face, blinding him with the harsh glare.

Julian threw his weight forward, slamming his hand down onto the manual fire-suppression valve located near the firewall just as the guard's finger tightened on the trigger.

A deafening hiss of compressed carbon dioxide erupted from the engine block, enveloping the front of the SUV in a massive, blinding cloud of white freezing mist that engulfed the guard and short-circuited the vehicle's electrical system in a shower of brilliant blue sparks.

The SUV's horn blared continuously, a long, agonizing wail that pierced the darkness, followed immediately by Arthur’s voice screaming curses across the warehouse floor.

Julian stumbled backward out of the smoke, wiping frost and chemical residue from his hands, only to freeze dead in his tracks as a cold barrel of a pistol was pressed firmly against the back of his neck.

"End of the road, Julian," Detective Miller's voice whispered softly in his ear. "Drop to your knees."
