Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Aisle

Detective Miller stepped fully into the sunlit room, his heavy leather shoes clicking against the hardwood floor with a rhythmic finality that seemed to seal their fates. He didn't look surprised. That was the detail that registered first in Julian’s racing mind—the utter lack of professional shock on the veteran detective's weathered face.
"A disturbance, Detective?" Julian said, forcing his posture to straighten as he stepped smoothly between the law enforcement officer and his children, shielding Mia from view. "There's been a terrible mistake. My daughter... she wandered in here, got trapped by a faulty latch on a display piece."
"A display piece," Detective Miller repeated slowly, his dark eyes shifting from Julian’s damp forehead down to the iron framing hammer resting on the floor near Leo's feet, and finally lingering on the roll of silver duct tape still protruding from Julian's suit pocket. "That's an interesting way to describe a custom-ordered, high-end burial casket bearing your daughter's exact measurements, Mr. Vance."
Clara let out a sharp gasp, her hand flying back to cover her mouth once more as she stared at the detective. "You knew about the casket specifications? How could you possibly know that unless—"
"Unless I do my job, Mrs. Vance," Miller interrupted smoothly, snapping his notepad shut with a sharp click that made Leo flinch. He took another step forward, his gaze fixed piercingly on Julian. "We’ve been tracking financial irregularities linked to your real estate firm for six months, Julian. Shell companies, offshore accounts, and a rather substantial life insurance policy taken out on each member of your immediate family just three weeks ago. Coverage amount? Ten million dollars per dependent."
"That standard corporate protection!" Julian snapped, his face flushing dark red as he took a threatening step toward the detective. "Every partner at the firm carries those policies! It has nothing to do with this!"
"Then explain the text message," a cool, unfamiliar voice echoed from the shadows near the back entrance of the chapel.
Everyone froze. From behind one of the massive stone pillars supporting the vaulted ceiling, a tall man in a tailored charcoal overcoat stepped into the light. It was Arthur Sterling, Julian’s senior business partner and the godfather to both Mia and Leo. He looked remarkably composed, holding a sleek black smartphone in his gloved hand, the screen illuminated and glowing brightly in the dim interior.
Arthur tapped the screen twice, and the distinct, unmistakable chime of an incoming text message rang out from inside Julian’s coat pocket.
Julian’s hand flew to his pocket, his fingers brushing against his own phone, but the sound had not come from him. Arthur slowly raised his device, smiling faintly as he watched the color drain completely from Julian’s face.

"You missed a spot, old friend," Arthur said quietly, stepping closer while Detective Miller casually rested his hand on the butt of his holstered service weapon. "The insurance payout requires a certified death certificate and a witnessed burial. We were almost finished."
