Chapter 1 - The Shattered Silence

The air inside the sunlit, sterile gallery of the Oak Ridge Memorial Chapel felt entirely too thin, thick with the heavy scent of imported white lilies and the sharp, chemical tang of fresh varnish. Julian Vance sprinted across the polished oak flooring, his heavy oxfords skidding slightly against the imported Persian rug before he caught his balance, his face flushed and contorted with a frantic, animal terror that he rarely allowed the corporate world to see.

"Get away from that casket!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking violently on the final syllable as he lunged forward, his outstretched hand missing Leo’s shoulder by mere inches.

Leo, standing rigidly beside the pristine, pearl-colored wooden box, spun around. The young boy’s face was soaked in hot, angry tears that tracked through the dust on his cheeks, his small fists clenched so tightly inside the pockets of his worn denim jacket that his knuckles had turned completely white.

"You don't get to tell me what to do!" Leo yelled back, his voice trembling with a mixture of profound betrayal and a rage far too old for a child of twelve. "You lied to her! You lied to all of us!"

"Leo, stop it right now! Step away from there!" Clara gasped from the corner of the room, her hand pressed tightly over her mouth to muffle the choked sob tearing at her throat, her black mourning dress rustling sharply as she staggered forward. "This can’t be real. Oh God, please tell me this isn't real."

Julian ignored her, his eyes locked entirely on the heavy iron framing hammer clutched in Leo’s right hand. The boy raised the tool high above his head, his small muscles straining against the weight, and brought the flat steel face down with a sickening, hollow thud against the pristine white lid of the coffin.

Clara shrieked, covering her ears as wood splintered and white lacquer cracked like eggshell under the savage blow. Julian lunged again, but it was already too late. Leo hauled back and smashed the hammer down a second time, tearing through the padding and the inner satin lining in a frenzy of raw, unfiltered grief. As the damaged lid finally caved inward, the morning sunlight hit the interior, illuminating the pale face of young Mia. She was motionless, her eyes wide with unexpressed terror, and a strip of heavy silver duct tape bound tightly across her mouth.

Julian froze dead in his tracks, his breathing hitching in his chest, as Mia’s eyelids suddenly began to flutter.
