Chapter 2 - Beneath the Surface

The deafening silence that followed the cracking of the white coffin felt heavier than any physical blow could ever be. Julian stood paralyzed, his arms still half-extended toward his son, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as the terrible reality of the sunlit room settled over them. Mia lay rigidly inside the cramped wooden enclosure, her blond hair matted with sweat against her forehead, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow spasms against the restrictions of the binding tape.
"Help her! What are you just standing there for?" Leo screamed, his voice breaking into a jagged sob as he dropped the heavy iron hammer to the floor with a dull, echoing crash. He immediately fell to his knees beside the casket, his small fingers frantically digging at the edges of the thick silver tape sealed across his sister's mouth. "Don't just look at him, Clara! Help me get this off her!"
Clara remained rooted to the spot, her knees trembling so violently that the black fabric of her dress seemed to ripple on its own. Her eyes were wide, fixed in a glassy stare upon the child inside the box. Her brain refused to process the scene unfolding before her. Only hours ago, they had signed the official death certificates, finalized the cemetery plots, and received the condolences of dozens of prominent community members. Funerals did not breathe. Caskets did not contain the living.
"Leo, be careful," Julian managed to whisper, his voice stripped of all its usual authority. He dropped to his knees beside his son, his shaking fingers gently brushing Leo's hands aside to take over the task. "Let me do it. You'll tear her skin."
With agonizing care, Julian gripped the corner of the heavy duct tape. Every instinct screamed at him to pull quickly, but the sight of Mia’s terrified, bloodshot eyes kept his movements agonizingly slow. With a sharp, quiet rip, he tore the tape free from her swollen lips. Mia gasped, sucking in a massive, ragged lungful of air, coughing violently as her body convulsed against the shock of oxygen rushing back into her system.
"Dad..." Mia whispered, her voice a dry, agonizing rasp that barely carried across the quiet room. "They... they put me in the dark before the guests came."

Julian pulled her fragile body into his arms, burying his face in her damp hair, but as he looked up over her shoulder, his blood ran instantly cold. Clara was no longer staring at her children; she was slowly backing toward the heavy mahogany doors, her face drained of all color, pointing a trembling finger directly at the open pocket lining of Julian’s expensive grey suit jacket. Protruding from the interior pocket was a small, familiar roll of silver duct tape, identical to the one Julian had just ripped from his daughter's face.
