Chapter 6 - Locked From Within

The heavy metallic echo of the deadbolt sliding home reverberated through the silent chapel, sending a fresh wave of panic rippling through the small group. Clara spun around, hammering her fists against the thick oak panels of the double doors, rattling the brass handles with all her might.
"Open this door! Let us out of here!" Clara shouted, her voice cracking as she threw her weight against the wood, finding it as immovable as a mountain. She turned back, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at Detective Miller, who stood unmoving beside Arthur with his hand still resting casually on his holster. "You're a police officer! What is happening here? Are you working with them?"
Detective Miller didn't answer her directly. Instead, he pulled a small black radio transceiver from his belt, clicked the toggle switch off, and slipped it into his inner coat pocket. "Mrs. Vance, the department received an automated call originating from this building reporting a domestic dispute. Official protocol dictates that I secure the scene until backup arrives in approximately forty-five minutes."
"Forty-five minutes?" Julian stepped between the detective and his family, his chest heaving as adrenaline surged through his veins. "You locked us in here with a man who just confessed to orchestrating an assassination plot! You aren't waiting for backup, you're buying him time to finish what he started!"
Arthur let out a soft, low chuckle, walking slowly toward the altar at the front of the room where the floral arrangements stood in neat, symmetrical rows. He reached out, gently touching the petals of a white lily before turning back to face them with an expression of quiet amusement.
"Julian, you always did overestimate your intelligence," Arthur said, shaking his head slowly. "You built an empire on paper, but you never understood the real rules of survival. Detective Miller isn't corrupt; he's just pragmatic. A failing real estate firm with massive debts and a dead family makes for a very clean corporate restructuring. The board has already voted in my favor, effective twenty-four hours after the official probate filing."
"You killed the board members too, didn't you?" Julian asked, the horrific realization dawning on him with sudden, crushing weight. The sudden heart attacks, the tragic car accidents over the past six months—men who had questioned the firm's offshore accounts, men who had threatened to audit the books. "Harlan. Sterling. All of them."
"They lacked vision," Arthur replied casually, checking his wristwatch with an air of profound boredom. "Just like you, Julian. You wanted to play the honest family man while embezzling millions to fund your extravagant lifestyle. I merely provided the paper trail that made you look like the sole architect of the crime."
Mia, still sitting trembling in the velvet chair, clutched her denim jacket tighter around her shoulders. Her eyes darted around the room, landing on the heavy iron hammer currently resting in Arthur's hand. Without a word to her parents, her small fingers began to inch slowly toward a heavy brass candleholder standing on a nearby pedestal.
"Dad," Mia whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the overhead lights, but the urgency in her tone cut through the tension like a knife.
Julian caught her gaze instantly. He knew he had to buy them time. Every second counted against the ticking clock of whatever trap Arthur had laid next.
"If you kill us here, the insurance company will investigate the claim for months," Julian said loudly, taking a deliberate step forward to draw Arthur's complete attention away from the children. "They won't pay out a dime while an active investigation is ongoing. You won't see a single cent of that money."
Arthur stopped pacing, narrowing his eyes as he considered Julian's words. A shadow of doubt flickered across his face for a split second before he smiled again, raising the heavy iron hammer lazily in his right hand.
"Who said anything about killing you here?" Arthur asked quietly, lifting his left hand to press a small remote control concealed within his palm.

Beneath their feet, the polished hardwood floorboards suddenly began to groan and slide apart with a loud, mechanical hiss.
