Chapter 6 - The Labyrinth of Pipes

The interior of the ventilation shaft was pitch-black, narrow, and smelled heavily of rusted iron and ozone. Leo crawled forward on his hands and knees, wincing as sharp rivets scraped against his bare knees. The puppy whimpered softly in the darkness, its small tongue licking a smudge of soot from Leo’s chin.

"Keep moving, do not look back," Marcus’s voice hissed from directly behind him in the cramped metal tube.

The low, vibrating hum of the city’s electrical grid was a constant physical pressure against their eardrums. Every few yards, vertical maintenance junctions branched off into the darkness, marked by faint, glowing phosphorescent arrows that pointed deeper into the subterranean maze.

"Marcus," Leo whispered, his voice trembling as exhaustion threatened to overwhelm his limbs. "Where are we going? Is there really an outside anymore?"

"There is an outside, Leo. But it is not the world you think it is," Marcus replied, his breathing heavy and strained as he hauled his bulky frame through the narrow opening. "The surface belongs to the Syndicate now. Everything you see—the streetlamps, the cars, the drones—it is all tied to the central neural network we just escaped from."

"Then why did they let us leave the lab?" Leo asked, stopping for a second to catch his breath. His arms ached from holding the puppy, but he refused to let go.

"They didn't let you leave," Marcus said grimly, his voice echoing in the metallic cylinder. "You broke out. Or rather, someone on the inside unlocked the perimeter seal for you. Someone who wanted you to bring that puppy straight to the resistance core."

Before Leo could process the staggering weight of those words, the metal floor beneath them gave a violent shudder. A sharp, high-pitched alarm began to shriek from somewhere up ahead in the ventilation network—a sound like grinding steel teeth.

The phosphorescent arrows on the walls suddenly shifted from a steady green to a flashing, aggressive amber.

"Trap door ahead!" Marcus yelled, lunging forward and grabbing the back of Leo’s tattered coat just as the metal flooring beneath the boy’s bare feet dropped away into an empty vertical shaft.

Leo let out a sharp gasp, his fingers slipping off the edge of the smooth steel lip as gravity pulled him downward into the abyss.
