Chapter 12 - The Face on the Billboard

The towering digital billboard flickered, replacing the vibrant commercial advertisements with a massive, high-definition close-up of a stern, silver-haired man in a pristine corporate suit. His piercing gray eyes scanned the plaza below with absolute, chilling detachment.

"Subject Leo, and associated biological anomalies," a synthesized voice boomed from the massive external speakers mounted across the facades of every skyscraper surrounding the plaza. "Your unauthorized presence in the central sector constitutes a severe violation of public security protocol. Surrender immediately to the nearest security node."

Pedestrians around them continued walking with mechanical precision, seemingly deaf and blind to the massive broadcast and the shivering boy standing in their midst. It was as if the entire city had been put under a collective trance.

"Do not look at the screens!" Iris warned sharply, grabbing Leo by the shoulder and pulling him into the deep shadows beneath a massive stone pillar supporting the base of the broadcasting tower. "The visual feeds are embedded with a hypnotic trigger designed to induce immediate compliance."

Leo squeezed his eyes shut for a second, catching his breath as he held the brown puppy tightly against his racing heart. "They know we are here, Iris. How are we supposed to reach the observation deck when every camera in the city is watching our every move?"

"By going where the cameras cannot see," a familiar, strained voice rasped from the ground.

Leo looked down in astonishment. Marcus had forced himself up onto his elbows, his face pale and covered in cold sweat, but his eyes burned with a fierce, unwavering determination.

"Marcus, you shouldn't be talking, your heart—" Leo started, but Marcus cut him off with a firm wave of his hand.

"Listen to me, Leo. The structural cooling vents for the broadcasting tower run directly behind this pillar," Marcus said, gasping for breath between every few words. "They are wide enough for a boy and a puppy, but not for an adult. You and Iris have to go the rest of the way alone."

"No, I am not leaving you here!" Leo protested, his voice cracking with emotion as tears welled up in his eyes.

"You are not leaving me, kid. You are saving everyone," Marcus insisted, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, heavy silver flash drive etched with the resistance logo. "This contains the counter-virus. When you reach the top terminal, plug this into the main console and hit execute."

Iris knelt beside Marcus, her glowing amber eyes softening with a deep, profound sorrow. "We will finish what you started, Marcus. I promise."

Marcus smiled faintly, his hand falling back against the cold cobblestone as his eyes drifted closed in exhaustion.

May you like

Before Leo could process the agonizing weight of the moment, the heavy metal grating of the cooling vent behind them suddenly hissed open, and a pair of glowing red optical sensors peered out from the darkness inside.
