Chapter 4 - The Voice in the Dark

The beam of the tactical flashlight sliced through the thick, stagnant air of the abandoned subway terminal, illuminating millions of dancing dust motes. The second wave of the groan echoed through the concrete cavern—lower this time, carrying a raspy, unnatural cadence that made the hairs on the back of Leo’s neck stand straight up.
The puppy whimpered softly, pressing its cold wet nose against the hollow of Leo’s throat.
"Stay behind me and keep that animal quiet," the man in the overcoat whispered, his hand sliding inside his coat to grip the handle of a heavy metal tool. "Whoever is down here is either a survivor of the purge or something the lab dumped before they sealed the upper levels."
Leo crept forward on his bare toes, wincing as a sharp piece of gravel pressed into his arch. Every breath felt heavy in the freezing dampness of the tunnel. As they rounded a massive concrete support pillar marked with the crimson eye-and-lightning symbol, the flashlight beam caught a huddled figure slumped against the curved wall of the drainage pipe.
It was a young girl, perhaps a year or two older than Leo, wearing a tattered gray institutional jumpsuit with the numbers 94-B stenciled across the chest in faded black ink. Her arms were wrapped tightly around her knees, and her head was bowed so low her chin rested against the floor.
"Hey," Leo called out softly, taking an instinctive step forward before the man could grab his shoulder. "Are you... are you from Sector Four?"
The girl’s head jerked up with unnatural speed. Her eyes, wide and completely devoid of ordinary pupils, glowed with a faint, iridescent amber luminescence in the dark.
"You brought them here," the girl rasped, her voice sounding like dry leaves scraping across concrete. "The hounds... they smell the puppy’s blood."
"What are you talking about?" the man demanded, stepping in front of Leo and sweeping the flashlight beam across the girl's arms.
That was when Leo saw it. A deep, jagged tear in the fabric of the girl's sleeve revealed a network of dark, pulsing veins beneath her skin that glowed with the exact same amber light as her eyes. It was not human blood pumping through her arm; it was a luminous, viscous fluid that seemed to pulse to the beat of an unseen mechanical rhythm.
"They did not just experiment on us," the girl whispered, a faint, heartbreaking smile touching her pale cracked lips. "They wired our nervous systems directly into the city's power grid. And right now... the grid just rebooted."

Suddenly, the overhead emergency lights flickered violently from green to a harsh, blinding crimson, and a deep, mechanical hum began to vibrate through the very foundations of the earth beneath their feet.
