Chapter 3 - The Symbol on the Brick Wall

The blinding flash faded, leaving behind an afterimage of violet spots dancing across Leo’s vision. He stood frozen on the uppermost metal step of the subway descent, his bare feet trembling against the frosted iron grate. Painted in fresh, glossy crimson right beside the rusted emergency exit handle was a familiar geometric emblem: a closed human eye encircled by a jagged lightning bolt.
It was the exact same insignia that had been branded onto the steel doors of the underground laboratory where Leo had spent the first six years of his conscious life.
"Move, kid! They are deploying the drones!" the man in the overcoat yelled, slamming his shoulder against the heavy chain-link gate at the top of the stairs. With a metallic groan, the padlock snapped open under a heavy iron bar the man had pulled from his coat pocket.
Leo clutched the puppy tightly to his chest, the animal’s frantic heartbeat thumping in rhythm with his own terror. He cast one last glance back toward the street. The sleek black sedan had come to a dead stop, its doors sliding open with a pneumatic hiss. No driver emerged. Instead, two spherical metallic drones hovered smoothly out of the cabin, their blue optical sensors spinning as they locked onto his thermal signature.
"Through the gate, now!" the man shouted, shoving Leo roughly past the threshold just as a narrow beam of intense blue laser light scorched the brick wall an inch from where the boy's head had been a second before.
Leo tumbled down the steep concrete staircase, skidding across the grit and discarded paper of the abandoned station platform. The puppy slipped from his grasp for a terrifying second, tumbling across the dusty tiles before Leo scrambled forward and scooped it back into his arms.
"Are you bleeding?" the man asked, panting heavily as he slammed the iron gate shut and dropped a thick security chain through the handles.
"I am fine," Leo breathed, wiping a smear of dark soot from his forehead. He looked around the cavernous, pitch-black subway terminal, illuminated only by the faint green glow of an emergency exit sign deep in the tunnel. "Where does this track lead?"
"Straight into the old drainage system beneath the financial district," the man replied, pulling a heavy tactical flashlight from his pocket and clicking it on. "And trust me, Leo, what is waiting for us down there is far more dangerous than any drone."

As the flashlight beam cut through the swirling dust, illuminating dozens of identical red symbols spray-painted across every support pillar, Leo heard a soft, human-sounding moan echoing from the pitch-black tunnel ahead.
