Chapter 11 - The Snap of the Cable

The rusted elevator compartment shuddered violently, dropping three inches before the emergency brakes engaged with a deafening screech of metal against metal. Dust and flakes of dried grease rained down from the ceiling, stinging Leo’s eyes as he pressed himself against the back wall of the cage, shielding the brown puppy with his own body.

"Are you okay?" Iris asked, shouting over the metallic groans of the strained cable system.

"I am fine!" Leo yelled back, keeping a firm grip on Marcus’s shoulders to prevent the unconscious man from sliding across the vibrating floor.

Marcus let out a low, ragged groan, his eyelids fluttering open for a brief second. "Leo... the... the uplink code..." he whispered, his voice barely audible over the roaring wind rushing up through the open shaft.

"Save your strength, Marcus, we are almost at the top," Iris said, pressing her palm against the rusted control panel of the elevator. The bioluminescent energy from her veins transferred into the ancient wiring, overriding the dead electrical fuses with a brilliant flash of amber light.

With a sudden, powerful jerk, the elevator car began to rise again, moving smoothly upward through the vertical shaft toward the surface. The air grew perceptibly colder and sharper with every passing second, carrying the unmistakable scent of winter snow and exhaust fumes from the city above.

After what felt like an eternity, the elevator slowed to a gentle halt. A heavy steel access grate blocked the exit overhead, illuminated by a sliver of pale twilight filtering down from the streets.

Iris reached up, pushing against the heavy iron grate with both hands. With a loud, echoing screech, the grate swung outward, flooding the dark elevator cage with the cold, blue light of the downtown plaza.

Leo clambered out first, hoisting the puppy onto the cobblestone street before pulling himself up through the opening. The wind hit him like a physical blow, reminding him instantly of the cold sidewalk where his journey had begun hours ago.

They had emerged right in the center of the grand plaza, directly beneath the towering, spire-like frame of the Syndicate’s central broadcasting tower. Massive digital billboards towered overhead, flashing hypnotic advertisements interspersed with the ominous crimson eye-and-lightning symbol.

Pedestrians in heavy winter coats hurried past in thick, synchronized streams, their faces blank and staring straight ahead, completely ignoring the small, barefoot boy, the shivering puppy, and the two battered figures emerging from a maintenance hatch.

"We need to get to the observation deck," Iris said, hauling Marcus’s upper body out of the shaft while Leo grabbed his legs. "That is where the main antenna control terminal is housed."

Suddenly, every single digital billboard in the plaza flickered simultaneously, cutting away from their advertisements to display a massive, towering face of cold authority—and a live video feed of Leo standing right on the cobblestones.
